I am a poor student that has recently come into some money, so I would like to surprise my girlfriend and take her on holiday over the winter holidays. Not actualy xmas, just whenever it's cheapest. I want it to be somewhere hot, and for a week, and I wan to spend 500 pounds on the flight and hotel - any ideas???

Well with an exchange rate of R14 to a pound, South Africa is a good option. If u can get cheep flights here - the weather is fantastic in Jan and u will find everything so cheap!!!!

You should be able to get a week away in one of the canary islands (Tenerife, Lanzarote, Fuerta Ventura, Gran Canaria) for that price, plus it's hot that time of year. Have a look on

take her to Alicante (southern spain)....!!!! it's such a beautiful place with blue flag beaches to fab sceneries...!!! go shopping or even go to a theme park. There are loads of bars, clubs and restaurants to choose from aswell. In January you can book a flight and hotel with expedia.com/ expedia.co.uk for under £500. And when i say under £500 i mean you can book a hotel that is 5* or 4* ... now that is treating your girlfriend!

Speak to your local travel agent or check out teletext to see what package holiday deals they can come up with. You should be able to get a good deal for January as everybody goes for the sun over Christmas/new Year.

I don't think you will get much for 2 people on £500, theare aren't many places which have warm winters.... maybe you could try egypt, turkey or sri lanka but i don't know how these locations will fit in with your budget.

Stay home mate, get the best champagne, a good heater for some extra warmth, caviar, and you girlfriend will be there off course
