Absolutely. We are most definitely classified as animals. We're mammals just like dogs and cats. While we are a different species, that doesn't mean we are better. We have been given unique abilities that carry the responsibility of helping those without them. But I don't think we are quite living up to the Stewardship imperative that the Christian Bible talks about. A lot of times, the part about dominion over animals is all that is heard and the stewardship part is forgotten (kind of like the eye for an eye verse in the new testament that is actually about turning the other cheek!). If we are above animals like the Christians and many other religions believe, then we need to live up to our responsibility to them.
I have heard, though, that the way we treat the earth and multiply out of control is more like a virus or bacteria. They use up the resources of an area or host, then move on to the next until it's used up, too. Hmmmm, sound familiar? And nobody should ever try to tell me my dogs didn't have a soul. They were more loving and compassionate than many humans I've met. So who is the better example of what it means to have a soul? And you are right. It isn't about religion, it's about observation, thinking, and deciding for yourself. Unfortunately, too many people are unwilling to do that.

Yes, scientifically speaking, we are animals too.
But we are still different for:
1) opposable thumbs
2) being at the top of the food chain
3) Not all animals reproduce sexually, and those that do, not all do it with-in lifetime family units (I know, I know, not all humans do either - but that's generally the goal).
4) We may not agree on the details, but we have a sense of ethics and moral obligation.
5) We often actively choose not to follow our instincts for something we feel is better.
I just generally don't like the "we're animals too" thing because people use it as an excuse to live a base life, instead of restraining one's self, or stretching one's self to be something better.

ahhh the days before the theory of evolution.....when humanity was humanity and animals were animals.
Only the theory is there, and if you CHOOSE to believe that we are animals, then you are absolutely right, you are no better than they are, and have no right to kill them. But then again, you believe in survival of the fittest, so by this theory, you should actually be able to kill other human animals if it benefits you. If were all just animals, why not kill each other? Its only nature taking its course right?
See I know that God created me in his image, and that I am therefore SPECIAL. I am above the animals, and have an eternal soul. You made it seem that accepting being an animal will help to understand why we are here??? how so??
So... Go forth you animal.....

Ever wonder why humans are the only creatures on this planet that can ponder our existance? No other creature on Earth is even remotely capable of our level of intellect and thought. How can I prove this? What other animals have made advances in techonoligy and their way of life in all of history? Animals have not done anything different to our knowledge than they ever have in the history of mankind. They are not getting more intellegent. We have rule over the planet for a reason, not because we are stronger, bigger, or faster, but because we have intellect and free will to defy our supposed nature.

You want reference, is the bible not a reference, where is says in Genesis that God created birds of the air, beasts on the land, and fish in the sea. Then God created man, to rule over all the other living things God created. It also says in his own image. That is most likely referring to the same soul.
I honestly don't know why people think we're animals besides the fact that we look like them. Try and find a reference yourself proving that we came from an animal, like some sort of monkey. Then try and find proof why it couldn't have possobly happened.
Well, whatever. Good luck.

Scientists place us in the category animals. We are not plants or minerals. Scientists also tell us that human kind are the only animals with reason. That separates us from the animals in a secular world, making humans superior to the subspecies in the animal kingdom. Did I prove it without religion? You decide. By the way... guess who gave the scientists their ability to discover these facts. God did!!!

Even if we are animals, through the combination of intelligence, opposable thumbs, and all our other qualities, we put ourselves above other animals because we uniquely have mastered all earth environments through our bodies and tools. We are indeed foremost among animals, both in compassion and in deadliness.
Besides, I bet those animals capable of such thought rank themselves higher than us...

No we are not animals, because unlike animals we have emotions and the knowledge of what is right and wrong.
Maybe you´re an animal by the looks of your picture but I certanly am not. I´m a human made in God´s image....
