When I read '3 Pillars of Zen', people talk about having an enlightenment experience where they directly experience what they really are (and experience God). When this happens, birth and death are literally seen as illusory and people experience themselves as what we all really are -- which can't be described. And the experience is one that tells them that they are immortal, forever, completely at peace, completely not this individual body and personality. One guy couldn't sleep for 2 or 3 days because of his joy. But if we read the book, we need to not rely on belief or perception; we should use it to motivate ourselves to get the same experience that's open to all of us. So ... the answer is: life, death, and birth are seen as illusions based upon an unquestioned and rock-hard perception that we are these brains, bodies, and personalities. Once that's let go, the experience of what we really are opens up and there is no such thing as 'life after death' or even this 'life' because we literally experience ourselves as the thing that has always been -- the thing that that was here before the universe started and will be here after it ends. And that can't be imagined -- only directly experienced.

There is something wrong with the premise that the soul is immortal. If you are an Athiest you dont believe in a created being with a soul. If you are a Christian and reads your Bible, - where does it say that the soul is immortal? On the contrary - the Lord says - "if you eat of this tree - you will die" and in Ezekiel it says - "the soul that sins - it shall die"(Eze 18:20) In Timothy (1Tim 6:16) it tells us that only God is immortal. So it is a wonder how this "immortality of the soul" is entertained and even preached in many churches. The most popular Bible text John 3:16 says if you believe - you have eternal life, if you dont, - you perish (die). Romans 3:23 says that the wages (the payment or penalty) of sin is DEATH.
Ok - so the soul is MORTAL and when we die, we simply rot and turn to ashes. No memory, no consciousness, no participation ever in what happens under the sun. (Ecc 9:5-6)
Immortality is given as a reward to the faithful during Jesus second coming as He promised in John 14: 1-2 and when he comes, then this mortal body (if saved) will be transformed into an immortal body 1 Cor.15;50-54
Of course, the Evil one say - If you eat of the forbidden fruit - You will not die - and he is believed by the world. Amazing deception easily unmasked by reading our Bible.
Back to your question- According to the Bible - there is no life after death (all are asleep) until Jesus comes, some to the resurrection of life (in heaven) some to eternal damnation.

science, rather true science says that matter cannot be created or destroyed except via devine intervention. the afterlife according to biblical scriptures says that every tear will be wiped away therefore there will be no more sorrow. those who would not be happy in heaven with god will not make it there. and really the soul is not immortal but rather the breath of god that gave life to the soul is.
in genesis it states "god breathed the breath of life into man and man BECAME a living soul" so really we are the living souls and when we die the breath of life which god gave us, scripture tells us, is returned to god. not us as a soul.
in the hebrew language the word for spirit is also the same word for breath hence the confusion of the body and the soul being seperate when really it is the breath of god combined with the body made of the earth that makes the soul.
to answer the question of what life is after death
those who die clinging to sin will be burned in the fire and be no more. it is not a place of eternal suffering like most would lead you to believe. to think of it logically if you are denied everlasting life yet you are burning in hell for all eternity then wouldnt that be considered everlasting life? so therefore being sent to hell is simply a temporary placement untill one has burned up and is no more (non existant)
however those who make it to heaven will be overjoyed to meet their creator and scripture tells us that no one will feel remorse or sorrow again

Life after death can be either follow of happiness or sorrow. This depends on how the person's life was. If he was a good person, who never hurt others, and tried to do good for himself and the people around him, then he will be rewarded.
But if he was a great sinner, who "lived his life to the maximum", and didn't care about others nor the community around him, then he would be really sorrow in the after life...

If you believe in God, you also believe in Satan... So in believing, there is a choice between Heaven and Hell, based on practices, conduct and obedience to the God/god you choose to serve here on earth...
(I believe) Heaven is full of happiness coexisting with sorrow... only because Heaven is full of Love and there will be lost souls that don't make it... "Jesus Wept"
And I think the theory of hell, if you believe, speaks for itself!
There is a must read book called: A Divine Revelation of Hell, By Mary K. Baxter, read it
and also she has a book called "A Divine Relevation of Heaven
The Bible say that there is "Eternal Life" or "Eternal Suffering"

Well according to Dictionary.com, a soul is a principle, so that isn't really the reason why there's life after death. However, that life depends on how we live our lives on earth. For those who delieve and confess their sins to God get to spend life with him forever. Those who don't are in the clutches of the devil, Satan who waits anxioustly to see God's people go to Hell. It's that sad thuth, but only if you make it that way, according to the bible.

Whether or not life after death is full of happiness or sorrow is up to you, my friend. If you try your best to live your life according to the will of God, you should have a very happy eternity.
