My cat, that I had a long time ago, had been severely abused, I rescued him. He would only pee in his litter box. He insisted on pooping in my son's room no matter what I did. I even put a litter box in that other room.
Your other cat may have threatened the one who now won't use it. Maybe you should try another litter box? Even in a different style? The other cat may not want to share anymore. Cats are known for their fickleness. Good luck!

My kitten did the same thing for two days, maybe get another little box and see what happens. Also, make sure it's clean and accessible. If it's in a place with alot of people walking around they don't want to use it the right way. Make sure it's big enough for both cats.

Definitely get another litter box. I read in a cat pamphlet that experts recommend one more litter box than you have cats. The four boxes for our three kitties works quite well.
The other option you might want to explore is did you change litter brands or depths? Some cats are very picky about their litter.

You speak of a "long time". Is this cat elderly? Arthritis may make it hard for him to get in the box when he has to poop even if he can get in when he has to pee. He clearly knows where he wants to try to be even if he can't be there. Try a box with lower sides. If that doesn't work, it may be time to have him checked out by a vet to see if he has any health issues that could be causing this. The poor thing is probably even more bothered than you are.

I had the same problem. My vet said get another box. One cat was going by the exterior door. the vet said it's not uncommon for cats to decide one Day not to share the litter box. Your cat is going by the litter box because he knows that's the area for doing their business. It just doesn't want to share it anymore. Get another liter box and it may solve the problem, unless the other cat decides to initiate it also. :)
Eventually each with declare which box is theirs! good luck

Each cat needs to have it's own box, and if it is dirty they will not go into it at all. Even if it is there own dirt in it. Cat like it clean around them. Your probably lucky the cat goes next to the box's it could go in even in your bed instead.

For some unknown reason older cats develop the habit of wanting one box for pee and one box for poop - go figure. That's one reason for the litterbox rule: # of cats + 1. So one box is not appropriate for two cats and you should really have three.

Have you changed brands of litter or their food? My cat started to have behavioral problems after we got another cat. Try getting two litter boxes.
