I've never owned a photo printer, and am looking around for something quick. I'll be printing 4x6 shots onto a 8.5x11 photo frame. So do I use the 31ppm speed or the 4x6 speed to determine how quickly these prints will come out?

Since you'll be printing mostly 4x6's, I suggest you look at the print speed for 4x6's.

You'll probably not get your photo printed in 20 sec though because the manufacturers typical boost their numbers - so that the 20 sec is not from the time you press the print button (either from your PC or digicam), but from the the time that the printer has completely received the print data.

First of all, the numbers stated are usually an average-to-best-case-scenario rating so don't really plan on getting the speed labeled on the printer. Secondly, use the 4X6 speed and slower since that's what you intend to print. The 31 ppm is for text. There are a lot of variables in printer speed. Black and White or color, density, detail, resolution, etc.

It doesn't depend on the camera or PC. it depends on the quality settings and what document you are printing. 31pages per minute is very high speed and thats only for low quality plain text printing.

The higher the quality and if you are printing images, it takes longer time to print.
