Depends on who's viewpoint. They all hold data, and that doesn't change. How exactly they store it is much different, and Blueray can hold slightly more data.

The main difference is the size the information can hold.
Both are from different companies, HD is from Toshiba, NEC Corporation, Microsoft, and Intel. Blu-Ray is from Sony, Panasonic.
HD DVDs can hold 15GB info and upto 30GB. The second one has dual layerd.
While the Blu-Ray DVDs can hold 25GB and upto 50GB. Meaning the Blu-Ray disks can initially hold more information without lossing cost.
Blu-Ray yields higher picture quality, due to higher bit-rates offered. It also offers better audio with AC3 audio encoding. However at Dolby Digital it offers 47% less bit-rate than HD DVD.
ALso, the Blu-Ray is in the development stages of making a hard coating for Blu-Ray, that will make it nearly invincible.
"The coating is said to successfully resist "wire wool scrubbing" according to Samsung Optical technical manager Chas Kalsi. It is not clear, however, whether discs will use the Durabis coating or if the use of the coating will prove too expensive."

Right now, HD-DVD has the better picture quality. BluRay is having some kind of problems in encoding their discs. See http://www.projectorcentral.com/blu-ray_2.htm
No doubt these issues will be resolved, and there won't be much difference as far as quality is concerned. However, BluRay will always be at a cost disadvatage--it is inherently more expensive to make, both the player and the discs.

Blu-Ray discs packets (the result of the laser burning the disc in order to put information on the disc) are closer to each other than in a HD DVD. Thus, Blu-Ray discs have more capacity since the data are held more "closely" together.

I doubt that either will go away just because they are linked to seperate video game systems. The movie stuff is an added bonus. Supposably a drive has been made by a third party to play both types of disks.

I compared blue-ray, HD-DVD and HD Tivo at Fry's electronic Superstore. surprisingly, to my eyes, Tivo has the best pciture, it is very sharp. oh, the TV is samsung LN-S4095D 1080p LCD HDTV.
PS. the blue-ray player is from samsung too, and the played movie is click. i dont see why the player cost $1k since the image qualilty is not so revolutionary.

It reminds me of the Beta and VHS war when VCRs came out. I am just waiting to see which captures the market, or if someone will come out with something better or plays both.
