You can also go to where you bank and open a savings account and get a secured credit card, which you would need to rent a car, stay in a hotel while traveling, make airline reservations, etc. I agree with the guy that said not to count on credit cards but to save your money and buy what you need; however, there are times where you need a credit card. The limit of the credit card is based on the money in your savings account, which secures the credit card. Once you've established a good history of paying on time, you can apply for your bank's credit card. That should help you out. For the person saying use your debit card - that will not help you establish credit for credit card vendors. A debit card is a check card that extracts the money from your checking account. A credit card is the money you don't have but are borrowing against and paying it back with interest. There is a difference.

go to the Bank of America and start an account. The talk with a loan officer and they might start you out with a minimum allowance credit card. usually not more than you have in the bank until you prove reliability.

Susan, don't make the big financial mistakes the rest of us made out of ignorance. You really don't need credit cards, just save for what you want and buy it. Read Dave Ramsey's book The Total Money Makeover. www.daveramsey.com
