I also want to know what makes you think that..
I am really sarcastic and American, and so are most people I know..
I honestly always thought it was the other way around. All of the Americans I know actually OVER use sarcasm.
NOT EVERYONE VOTED FOR PRESIDENT BUSH. Sorry, just had to get that out of my system. That wasn't directed towards the person who posted this question either..

It's not all ameriacns that don't get the british sense of humour.
I live with an american guy and he loves british comedians like Lee Evans, Jimmy Carr, Bill Bailey etc.
By the same token I have local friends that don't get or don't like the people named above..
It's all down to personal taste more then where you're from.

I thought this too. But I stayed with a very working class family in Philadelphia and they totally got British homour/irony/sarcasm.
Its only middle class Americans and yuppies that dont get it.

it's more that american and british irony are quite different. both understand the other but they don't usually find it as funny as their own brand of irony.
as for americans being lousy at anything but formulaic humour, remember seinfeld, jon stewart etc, there's a lot of good stuff out there if you look beyond teatime bbc2 reruns.

Because Americans are stupid.
I say this as an American. Now there's some irony!
Apparently we have a big problem in this country with the "Fundie" mentality. These people can't understand anything unless it's laid out in the most brutally stupid black-and-white terms.

some do- look at comedies such as Frasier.
I find that many english people do not get it either.
It may be considered one of the lowest forms of wit, but i love it.
Maybe they don't get sarcasm because it is not available on sky or cnn!

They do. You only have to watch comedies such as Frasier, The Simpsons, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Arrested Development, Seinfeld (to name a few), to realise their humour is sometimes more sophisticated than that of our UK comedies.
