My 4yr.old Amer.bulldog just delivered a litter of 8 pups on 10/14/06 and the pups have been dropping like flies! we are down to 3 pups as of today. I keep the room nice, clean and warm but their body temp. started to drop very quickly one by one. The 3 survivers seem to be doing well,
I just wondered what could have happened? This is my dogs 2nd litter, the first litter was born 3/17/06 she had 7 pups and 6 survived. Was it to soon to mate again? Please Help!

First off go to the vet with the last 3 pup's. And Yes you are right to believe that it was too soon to breed your bulldog again. You should have waited at less a yr. dog's like humans needs time to recoup from the stress that it wears on them between pregnancy's. Your dog may not be able to produce enough milk for them. and you should really watch the mother dog. Is she doing well with them. feeding them and cleaning them and doing all the good mommy stuff. keep a watchful eye on her. and good luck! Call you vet and ask them question's and please take them in to be looked at before you loose any more. This includes the mother dog. Good luck

Friendly Hello,

I would suggest contacting your vet. Be sure to tell exactally what is going on. Your female may be lacking the necessary milk to care for a litter. She could have a infection that the puppies are getting through nursing. Could be several kinds of canine diseases that you did not know your female picked up prior to having puppies. I would recommend skipping a heat cycle if you are still planning on breeding her again. She just might have not had enough time between having the first litter and breeding back to back heat cycles. I know this is not much help but I sure do hope you do not loose another puppy. Blessings, Kelly

One more thing. I knew of a lady whos puppies dies like this as well. When she finally took to the vet it was coccidia. Which if caught in time is cureable. Your female can be transmitting it to the puppies by cleaning them.

Make sure they are staying at a MINIMUM of 76 degrees... is she feeding them regular? Have you tested her to make sure she is producing milk?
Is the laying on them?
There is a great way to make a whelping box to keep the pups in that has rails around the side.. that way if a pup gets up against the wall the mother cannot crush them.
Call the vet and ask their opinion also!

Is the mom taking care of them this time? What type of floor is the dog bed on? I know sometimes the floor can make them colder even though the room is nice and warm. Can you install a warming lamp to help keep them warm. Sometimes the warm air in a room is not enough to sustain their body temp.

while a runt dies formerly 2 weeks of age, it somewhat is probable as a results of organ failure, inner/genetic illness or overlook (from the mummy) and vets confer with those deaths as a "failure to thrive." in the wild, runts are often deserted or killed outright by way of the mummy as a results of fact they have a lesser hazard at existence and giving interest and foodstuff to the puppy is a waste of the mummy's power and it takes far off from the reliable one's foodstuff furnish. this is totally unhappy, despite if it somewhat is only the way issues are. i'm sorry on your loss and that's advisable to take the puppy to the vet's for an examination just to be on the risk-free section. despite if, as a results of age, they could no longer have the skill to furnish you a immediately answer approximately why the puppy died. those issues only take place and you're able to be able to't avert it in the event that they're meant to die.

To me this seems like some kind of virus or something. You might want to take the other pups in to have them cleared, or they may have the same fate. The deaths may be caused by the mothers milk because she may be sick.....

Is there a chance these pups are inbred? No offence,it happened to my stupid female cat, and 2 kitties died a few days after delivery. She just felt something was wrong and just stopped taking care of them.

You have to get them to a vet ASAP. Could be a lot of things, including Canine Herpes Virus.

And yes, it was too soon to breed her again. Reputable breeders usually wait two years between breeding.
