I have breastfed both my children until they were 4 1/2 months old. For my first child, I didn't get a period until two months after I stopped. I'm still waiting for my period on the second child. I just stopped two weeks ago.
I applaud your ability to BF for 9 months.

My son is 8.5 months...and still breast feeding. I really didn't think I was going to make it to 6 months and yet here we are. He gets 1 bottle of formula per day, as I hate pumping and need to be away. I go back to work in January, so a couple more months then we will stop completely. I started getting my period the month I started supplementing with a bottle... :(

I breastfed all six of my babies. How long you breastfeed is completely up to you. In many countries, the average age to breastfeed is 4 years old. I breastfed my youngest daughter until she was about 2. If you and your child are comfortable with it continue to breastfeed. The benefits to your baby and the bonding that occurs between mother and child is incomparable to anything else in this world.

Sure, breastfeeding your child up to 24 months(even though their are silly people out there that say thats crazy) Is NORMAL people. So yeah I usually breastfed mine until they were 6 months to a year. The longer you do it the better it benefits them. Its all up to you and the baby. Although I didnt get the luxury of not having a period. I got my period all 3 times 6 weeks after having the baby, even though I exclusively breastfed. Oh well, some are luckier than others.....Good luck with your baby.

My son still nurses and he is ten months. Of course i have gotten comments on that, but I will do it until he wants to stop, and he shows no signs of that. Of course, he has gotten so big, it is hard to walk thru store and do it discreetly like before. I feel like there are lots of people who can change his diaper and give him a bottle, but only mommy can nurse him, so even though I get sad sometimes that I work and he has to go to sitter, it makes me feel like we still have a connection. It took 7 months to get my period back this time, the other times varied. I have 5 children total and they all stopped when they were ready.

I believe in child-lead weaning. My son weaned at 3 years 5 mos of age. My middle daughter weaned at about 22 months. My youngest daughter is still nursing at 3 years 8 mos. of age.
With my first, I got my period back at 10 mos. With my second, I got it back at 9.5 mos. With my third, it was around 16 mos when my period finally returned.
Breastfeeding provides so many amazing benefits to both mother and child. Self weaning has been great for us since it's allowed the children to grow to independence on their own. It's kept them healthy and given us many opportunities to be cuddled up close. It fixes owies and helps them relax. I'm glad that we've taken this path.

My son will be 18 months old this month and I am just about done weaning him. I think that any time after a year old is fine to start weaning. It is a bit harder for me as I co-sleep with him.
I guess I am one of the lucky ones...my period just recently started up again.

I breastfed my daughter for 18 months and I'm breastfeeding my six month old. I'm not sure when I'll stop, but at least one year and probably longer.

Nursed both of my kids, never did use bottles and let them wean themselves. My second one nursed until he was about 22 months, I didn't get my periods until he was about 19 months old - it was wonderful!!
