Uhm, just in case you read anurod h's answer and are confused, I want to clarify a few things.
Yes there is a DIRECT link between smoking and cancer. A carcinogen knocking out an anti-tumor gene is just about as direct as you can get in the world of oncology. Furthermore, there is more than one carcinogen in tobacco, and some of them (eg; tar) can bind to and damage DNA directly. Your chances of developing lung cancer increase dramatically if you smoke, or are even near smokers often. Not only that, but you also are more likely to form tumors outside of the lungs as well. Additionally, you increase your risk of getting other respiratory disorders, heart disease, and strokes.
No amount of vitamin C will stop that; 'antigenic' property doesn't mean anything except that it makes a good target for your immune system. Even if that were true, which it isn't, it wouldn't make any sense, or be helpful at all. I think he meant 'antioxidant', but likewise, antioxidants won't prevent the damage that occurs from cigarette carcinogens. Antioxidants will only prevent damage to DNA due to free radicals formed from certain oxygen compounds.
Don't mean to slam you, anurodh, but this is something no one should be confused about!

I personally believe like salt and pork causes blood pressure problems in some and in others it doen't.Smoking can be dangerous for some and not others. My Dad smoked foe 50 years and had perfect lungs when he passed. My husband smoked for 29 years and he had the lungs of a youth is what a Doctor told him. He smoked heavy. He died of a self inflicted gun shot.It is not a smart thing,I smoked for 27 years and it runs my blood pressure up,so I quit.

Absolutely!! The nicotine and carcinogens found in cigarette smoke go directly into the lungs when you inhale. They, in turn, get into your alveolar sacs and destroy them by suffocating them (there's tar in cigarettes, as well). Once the air sacs are clogged with the tar, clean air can't force its way into these sacs, thus causing them to die. An x-ray of tar-damaged lungs would look like 2 shriveled up black sponges, where as a healthy lung x-ray would look expanded and pinkish-red.

there is no direct relation of smoking with cancer. the evidence put forwarded is from the research in which the non smokers had relatively low probability of acquiring cancer. however the anti oncogenic gene i.e p53 is most likely to get inactivated by the benzopyrene(carcinogen in ciagrete smoke). you had better go on smoking without being caught of cancer. eat plenty of vitamin c . it has strong antioncogenic property.
