It depends on what you plan on holding in the tank. Both high and low density polyethylene (HDPE, LDPE) and fiberglass are common for general use holding tanks. Assorted specialty polymers are used for specialty materials that are being stored, depending on the properties of the stored materials--organic acids, oxidizing acids, aliphatic solvents, monomers---all exhibit different properties that must be considered when engineering a storage vessel.

Depends on what their end use is, but the most common are either concrete or carbon steel. Why?, because they are inexpensive and easily erected.
