Not appropriate at all. He should have supervision while on the internet, or be in a common room where anyone could walk in at any time. He needs you to protect him from even his own curiosity.

It is not a good idea for anyone to have a computer in their bedroom. You bedroom should be a place of rest and peace. Other than that the computer should be in a public location in your home so you can see what is being viewed on the computer. Even if your son is a GOOD boy why tempt him with so many bad things in private. If the computer is where you can see it then you will all be safer. Also, be sure to have a good filter to make sure of what kind of content can get through.

Personally, I think 10 years old is too young. There are alot of people out there that you don't want your child exposed to at that age. Perhaps you should leave the computer in a family area. There is nothing that he can look at, in which you shouldn't be able to see. Besides, I don't think at 10 he's old enough to understand what having a computer can bring. Such as internet predators and sexual content. And I don't think you want him to learn a lesson a hard way. Just to be safe- don't do it.

Keep the computer out of his room! A computer should be kept in a living room or family room where when you walk by you can see what he is doing. At 10, he is definately too young and as a teenager there are even more dangers on a computer that you do not want him exposed to.

If the computer doesn't have internet access, 10 is fine. If it does, then 10 is too young. Letting your child on the internet without watching him is like dropping him off in the middle of a big city to wander around by himself.

It would really depend on many aspects. How mature your son is? How open you communicate with him? What parental control you wish to observe? Is it for internet or just homework? And whether you want someone influencing your son?
Personally all our computers for my 5 children are in the open. Anything on thier computer screens is set up so I can see them on my computer screen. There are many excuses on why teens want on in thier rooms but 10 is a little young to allow free rein into the world of the internet.
I could compare it to the same senario as...would you let your 10 yo ride his bike 50 miles to another town and enter into the house of a 60 yo man's house to play chess. If he is in a yahoo chess room racticing his game that is what you would be doing. Within that time frame you allow that person to have an influence over your child.
Even on the Disney website there have been pediphiles that have created identities as 10 yo girls to manipulate other children who they meet there.
So use extreme caution if you chose to let him have one in his room with internet. Set up rule and boundries like no chat rooms, he cant be on the computer with the door closed, and no password protection, and that you will inspect his computer anytime you want, and that he cant erase the history or temp files. That way you can get into it and see what he is up to and sites he has visited. If you check and its empty then he is hiding something or the computer did a scheduled maitanence-you can disable that.
And for god's sake teach him about sex and predators before a predator does. 10 is not to young to learn to protect against pediphiles. Its the world we live in.

If your child needs a computer to do his homework, then get him one, but not in his room. Leave it in the living area or somewhere that you can see what he is doing. Too many paedophiles and predators on the internet seek our young children, and parents usually dont know about it. Actually, its best for children's development if they are not sitting infront of the PC all day, so he really does not need it.

As long as you put parental controls on it you should be fine. Computers are a great thing for kids these days. I know some kids who know more about them than I do. The unfortunate thing is all the sick people in the world. Just make sure your son is safe.

I am twenty years of age and i have not had a computer in my room.
I could get one but i have better things to do with my money.
Anyway, no child dshould have a computer in his room unless of course you have no internet connection running to that room.
When he is 18 and working to pay the internet bill then fine, go ahead.
