Smoking affects bone growth and development because, among other things, it affects the small blood vessels of the body. One of the things these small blood vessels supply is bone.

If you are not feeding your bone cells, bone deposition is abnormal and you get osteoporosis.

This is also how smoking causes:
eye disease
heart disease
kidney disease
small babies (small vessels of the placenta are affected)
peripheral vascular disease

It blocks up small blood vessels and can affect any or all of the above in addition to the osteoporosis.
