This phenomenon is called Water Intoxication and can indeed be fatal. Drinking too much water causes hyponatremia (low sodium levels) which upsets the functioning of the body's electrically active cells (neurons, the heart, muscle).

It's not actually the quantity of water you drink per se but the speed with which you drink it. You can drink up to 15 litres a day quite happily but if you drink 3 litres in a single sitting you may kill yourself.

The kidney can only produce urine at 1.5 litres per hour as a maximum level. Drinking quicker than this dilutes your blood too much and may lead to cardiac or respiratory failure.

In a word, yes. Drinking too much water can lead to a condition known as water intoxication and to a related problem resulting from the dilution of sodium in the body, hyponatremia.

This can be fatal. Many deaths related to ecstasy use are thought to be caused by people drinking too much water too fast. It also affects athletes, people doing the marathon for instance have died from drinking too much on the way round.
