Oui, ca ce'st vrais. Quite true. I went to a French school in a foreign country for 6 years and if I didn't pronounce the word correctly, the teacher literally came and move my mouth for me and had me repeat the words until I had it right. It was a bit easier for me in a way, since I already spoke Spanish and English. The best suggestion is if you had the financial means, is go to France for at least 6 months to a year.

It's not THAT important to pronounce it correctly, but true it is quite hard to pronounce and of course in all languages pronouncing things correctly is somewhat important. I mean, even in english, we have words like guard/gourd, flash/flesh, etc, which would be quite easy for someone learning english to mix up and completely change the meaning of their sentence.
In my experience, most people agree on two things about french:
1. It's harder to learn than english. Most expert linguists say the opposite, but the vast majority of the bilingual (and trilingual) people I've spoken to say that english is easier.
2. In french it's the conjugation that's the main problem, while in english it's the exceptions. Almost all french words are phonetic (you can tell how they are pronounced from the way they're spelled), but their verbs are much more complicated than ours.

When first learning it can be tricky, but all languages are that way at first. Yes you do need to learn proper pronunciation of the words because some words look similar but are pronounced differently to get different meanings.
A nice piece of software to help you learn are the Rosetta Stone Language Programs
Good Luck and have fun

no, it's really not that difficult to pronounce. the worst part about french is just getting your tenses right (the words that correspond to past, present, future, passé composé and stuff). french is a really fun language. it's definitely easier to read french than speak it, but i really like it.

It's a dirty job, but somebody's got to do it.
That's okay, though. We'll need skilled interpreters to conduct interrogations when we invade France.
