Are you home with the kittens during the day? Cats and kittens do sleep a lot. That is just their nature. And you have heard of the "cat nap" I assume. They don't sleep for sixteen or even five hours straight through as we tend to - going to bed at night and being up and active most of the day.

My cats are in their "teens". They get up for breakfast and are up for a hour or so. Then the morning nap which may last for a couple of hours. Then they are up for another hour or so before the serious afternoon nap which lasts from just after noon until four o'clock. Then they are active again and waiting for dinner. They settle down in the evening when I settle down to watch TV or read and they don't sleep at that time. If I am late going to bed they are definitely impatient to see me under the covers, some settling with me in the bedroom and others at various spots in the house. They usually get up sometime during the night and then will sleep a little till it's time to wake me up for breakfast.

Two reasons.
1. Cats are nocturnal animals and by nature, like to be up at night and sleep during the day.

2. The kittens are growing and what with the play and all, they need their rest.

Good question,

They ar elike little kids, their muscles are building, so the get tired. It would be about the equivilent of you working out ofr 10 hours a day. You would be pretty tired. My Vet told me that kittens should sleep at least 16 hours a day, but more like 20 until they reach adulthood. My cat sleeps all night starting about 10, wakes up wheni do and plays for a few minutes. then i leave and she goes back to sleep. I get home at 5 and we play until about 10. she is perfectly happy, and healthy!

There's no doubt about it: cats sure know how to sleep. Although the amount of time spent napping varies from cat to cat, and depends on the cat's age and personality, felines spend an average of 13 to 16 hours each day curled up in slumber. Only the opossum and the bat sleep more – napping away almost 20 hours a day.

Nobody is sure why cats sleep so much. Cats evolved from a long line of hunters and predators – and their sleep patterns reflect that. For one thing, they are crepuscular (most active at dawn and dusk), since most of their prey is active at these times. This gives them plenty of time to sleep during the middle of the day.

The cat's diet may play an important role in its sleep patterns. Large grazing herbivores must graze for hours to supply their bodies with enough food. But the protein-rich diet of the cat does not require such an investment of time, and allows him plenty of time for napping.

Of course, today's modern indoor cat sometimes sleeps out of boredom. You can help your kitty by providing plenty of stimulation during the day – this can be in the form of toys, a companion, or by spending quality playtime with you. If he has plenty to do during the day, he may prefer to stay awake then, and sleep more during the night when you do.

If they are sleeping during the day then keeping you awake at night, play real hard with them about a half an hour before you are ready to go to bed and they will settle down. Mine did also sleep a lot during the day. The vet is the one who told me about playing with them right before bedtime. Mine still sleep some during the day but they do play a little more now.

Cats are night time creatures, mainly. As they get older they may start to stay awake a little bit longer during the day, but they will still sleep alot.

Good Luck and Take Care

Because cats are nocturnal. they sleep most of the day. so they can be up during the night to hunt. This is just something that they did in the wild and has never really changed over the hundreds of years of them being domesticated. hope this helps answer your questions!

What else are they going to do, no thumbs to play xbox or anything.
Cats are nocturnal by nature, so less activity during the day means less energy wasted.
And with kittens even more so, since they need to grow.

cats are awake at night so they need their sleep in the day, and for kittens since they are growing and playing alot, they need alot of sleep to.
