Tough question. I don't know what you are stepping up from, but the D70s would be a major league player. If the extra money isn't a hardship for you, then definitely get the D80. They added about $500 worth of value for $150. The D80 not just a minor evolution, but a whole quantum leap ahead of the D70s. Now... If you CAN'T pony up the cash, don't feel bad. I've been telling people to look for close out sales on the D70s, as it is still an EXCELLENT camera and if the price drops (through rebates), it will be a relative bargain.
If it makes a difference in your budget, buy the D70s and get a decent lens instead of the cheap kit lens. The Nikkor AF-S 18-70 f/3.5-4.5G ED DX lens is the usual upgraed lens and it is a decent lens. It will do more to enhance your pictures than the step up from 6 MP to 10 MP when compared with the kit lens.

I vote with anybody right here and choose OMG because the perfect answer. in basic terms including some help to anybody's information rather of writing my personal answer. in my opinion, i imagine i might want to lust after the D80, however if I kept a load of money on a D70s, notwithstanding. The D200 is slightly "extra constructive" than the D80, yet I personal a D70s and a D200 and that i visit inform you I hardly ever contact the D70s. It lives in my workplace, committed to macro paintings.

The D80 for sure.
~Much higher quality in every way
- Picture Quality (10.2 MP instead of 6.1)
- Sturdiness - Has a much more solid feel and more durable construction. This camera will last longer.
- Commands are more at your fingertips. If you want to change a setting you can change more things by dial or button rather than searching through a digital menu.

Make sure you get an ED glass lens with it, not matter wich one you choose. D80, in my opinion, would be a better camera.
Bear in mind that the lens is what really makes the picture fantastic (besides your eye, of course!)
Happy shooting.
