This is the all mighty “god” that created the universe including the millions of galaxies, billions of stars and trillions of planets, black holes, nebulas, pulsars, quasars and other things in our known universe. With the fact our solar system is so insignificant compared to our galaxy and our galaxy being utterly insignificant compared to our universe what is the chance that this “god” would pay any attention to this tiny planet orbiting a mediocre star in a common galaxy (the spiral galaxy is pretty common in the universe). It would be ridiculously egotistical to believe he would send prophets let only his own “son” down to this planet and “save us from our sins”. Thus the concept of heaven and hell or Satan and any other religious belief wouldn’t make sense because we aren’t even visible to “god” if he created the whole universe. Do you get the concept of how microscopic we are compared to the universe? This “god” probably doesn’t even know we exist.

Please don't say "god" created the universe to show off his powers to us. That is an absurd statement.

Why do religious people think the universe was created for them?

Wow, the people who are religious proved they are egotistic with their answers.

It's easy to be egotistical when you believe you're better than everyone else.

It may sound demeaning, but it's a simple fact: Those who believe they have the answers to life will inherently feel superior to everyone else. How can you not?

Christians believe they will be enjoying Heaven after death while everyone else suffers.
Muslims believe in something similar.
Those who place stock in karmic reincarnation believe they have control over their next life by doing good things now while everyone else ignores the great celestial order and suffers in the next life.
Those who place stock in karma believe that they are bringing good fortune on them by doing doing things while everyone else is just causing heaps of trouble on themselves.

It is the concept of "knowing" that causes conceit. It happens in school, work, and religion. If you know something that no one else does, it can make you a little egotistical.

Edit: As for your question of why religious people believe the universe is created for them, I think it's because they cannot handle the alternative. Which of the following beliefs is easier to swallow:
* Someone loves me so much that he created a whole universe for me, and he really unconditionally cares about what happens to me.
* The chances of me existing are actually less than me not existing, so I am just this fluke in the universe, and if I want someone to care about me, I better go out there and make it happen.

Some people can't handle believing the second scenario, so they HAVE to adopt the first one (or some variant thereof).

Christians are not egotistical. We know what we believe, and we stand by it. If that is your definition of egotistical, then I'd have to call you egotistical. I mean, you believe what you believe. Besides, look at all of these scientists who go out of their way to try, and I'll say this again, TRY and disprove the Bible. These so called professors think they are high and mighty just because they don't believe in the Bible (and in the meantime they are hiding behind the walls of universities and colleges) . They think that to be considered intelligent, you can not believe in God, when the true definition of science says you should be open to all possibilities.

As Christians, we have the right to believe what we want. If you don't like that, then take it up with the Constitution. We have freedom of religion and speech.

Egotistical? Christians believe what the Bible says. You are throwing human logic to try to understand the same being you described that created all of this. Can you create a planet or much less a universe? Then how can you compare your reason with someone who can. Obviously if He created all of this His essence is beyond our comrehension.

I have thought about the same issue, but on a much different level. I am humbled and honored that this same all powerful God cares about us. God is big. What makes you think that this universe we live in is big to Him? You cannot associate finite human logic with an omniscient God.

actually... it is the other way round...

people invented religion and gods because they could not stand the feeling of being utterly unsignificant in the whole process that we call universe... their minds are too small, their egoes to fragile to look at the whole scape without some kind of mental barrier that protects them from the various totally uncontrollable influences, each of which can at any time wipe out their own existance for no good reason whatsoever. so they imagine a reason... they imagine a plan... and someone who has the plan, because they themselves can obviously not have it, it has to be a being greater than they... a god... and why does he know the plan? because he made it himself, when he created all this... and although we cannot comprehend his scheme... there surely has to be one? because the idea that there migth not, hardly bears thinking...

what religion does is to make the world a smaller place, so that smaller minds can try comprehend it. sad but true

Im not religious...Im saved by grace...
who are we to question God? Dont you think He has all this under control. Calm down...He can handle us and the rest of the galaxy. We need to get busy about the Fathers Business. Most Christians arent egotistical (except the ones who think theyre closer to God) If youll study the Christian religion youll see they a true Christian is meekly and humble...knowing our rightuosness is as filthy rags. Until we get a glorified body.

WONDERFUL respsonse Xander!

We are one with the Universe. We are God!

But wait, we may just be a tiny speck of an organism in someones science experiment in another dimension! That would make us really insignificant! Imagine that!

Blessed Be.... ; )

The Grand Architect of the Universe is not the same as the God that rules over this world. Yaldabaoth/Jehovah is genocidal and egotistical as many of his followers are.

I don't think is was to show off His powers to us. I think it was to show us how much He loves us. That there are all these wonderful things out in the universe but He still cares about us and pays attention to us.

Bush is a conservative Christian devout extremist similar to the conservative Islamic devout extremists. They're each within the equal boat, seeking to impose their notion on every person else. Religious extremism have got to be squashed!

Very religios people often feel that God has revealed himself to them, and that makes them feel privilidged and egotistical. We really are nothing in the face a God, if there is a God.
