Thomas Edison tested 10,000 materials before he found one that would work in an incandescent light bulb. He had faith that he would find it, though he did not have certainty.
I have faith my marraige will work, though I do not have certainty.
Scientists have faith that someday they will understand the origins of life, but they have no clue today how it happen.
Faith and reason are opposites sides of a coin called thought. Do not minimize it and reduce the usefulness of your consciousness.

The writer of the book of Hebrews defines faith as : "Faith is the evidence of this not seen, the substance of things hoped for".
In any area of life, not just religion, faith is used. A scientist will conduct experiments, gather facts, study, etc. But there comes a moment when he has to reach a conclusion. At that moment he uses faith. His belief that all the facts are right is would lets him come to his conclusion. His "faith" is the final piece of evidence that makes up his mind. Once he has reached his conclusion, all future data is "filtered" through that belief.
Same with religion. People rarely just wake up one day believing. They look at the world around, the evidence for God, the things contained in the scriptures, the things they see happening in the lives of others around them, and they reach a reasonable and rational decision. They either decide there is or is not a God. That decision is a step of "faith" either way. Once that decision is made, it becomes the final piece of "evidence" in their arguement for their belief.
Once such a "faith step" is made, that faith will give substance to their belief. If the Wright Brothers had not had "faith" that they could build a working airplane, none of us would be flying today. So it was an action of faith - believing they could fly - that lead to everyone being able to fly today.
Similar acts of religious "faith" had lead to impossible things being accomplished all through history.
Faith is making the decision to believe something (but its not a trick). And the results of faith can be great things - including the ability to fly.

I can fly I read a book and I know how to fly. Maybe it's because you just can't believe hard enough.
