I'm leaving my 2 year old Beagle in a crate for the first time today. I'm nervous. I've only had him for a couple days. He likes spending time in his crate but this is the first time he'll be on lock-down. I'll be leaving him for 4-6 hours. I got him from a shelter so I dont even know if he has a history of crate training. He's a very quite, calm, good little doggie. I put him in the crate and hid. He whined a little bit at first but quieted down. I left the TV on and left one of my t-shirts in his crate.
Will he be alright?! :S

Sweet! Thanks for all the info everyone. I understand that crate training is perfectly fine...but my concern was that I'm leaving him in the crate NOT knowing if he has been crate trained before. I just hope he's not freakin out!

Crates are great things. They simulate a wild dog's natural habitat, the den. Get him a Kong...stuff it with good stuff...put it in the crate and put the dog in. It will be fine. In fact, it may feel a lot more secure in the crate than out wandering because a wild dog would use its den as a safe place. Make the crate your dog's safe place and there shouldn't be too many problems.

Leaving your pooch in a crate is not cruel. Dogs have a natural denning instinct. As long as you are conscientious about making it a comfortable experience for them, your dog will find security with its crate. Never use the crate as punishment and let them know that that is their safe zone. Ask the shelter where you got your little doggie ....about possible background of your dog. Pets-Mart has cute and reasonably priced products you can purchase to dress up your little doggies room...w/stuffies a little ball for amusement, etc. The t-shirt was a great idea. Your scent is on it. and the tv...well....remember...a fuse can blow and cause a fire while your out. Radios work well....a little soothing classical or soft music that you also enjoy ...will comfort your little friend.

He'll be just fine. Actually crate traing is the best thing I have ever done...both for me and my dog.
I don't come home to 'accidents' whether it is a puddle on the carpet, or a dog that has been chewing on a cord and electrocuted himself. I have dobermans, and my breeder told me...if a buglar is a professional and is serious about robbing your house, he will dispose of the dog one way or the other. If the burgular is not too serious about robbing you and hears the dog bark (crated or not), he will probably just find an easier target. So, again for your peace of mind, he is better off in the crate.
My dogs have been crate trained from the time I brought them home. They love their kennels. It's their safe house!

i guess he'll be alright but after a while he might start to get bored. he might probably start to whine a little bit but you should try to put stuff that he likes in his crate.try to put things that will keep him busy for a long time. but make sure that you don't feed him cuz he might want to use the bathroom. But i guess he'll be alright if you leave him things that he likes. I also think that you should leave him in the back yard so that he can be running around and playing. But you should try leaving him on his crate for a little bit while you're there to see what happens. but if he likes the crate, just leave him there.

he will be alright and eventually the crate will become his "den" a safe place to go to get away from things... (like pesky kids)
simply DO NOT give into whining - if you do you will train him to cry to get out..
NEVER use the crate as a punishment
leave the crate open and accessable when the dog is loose in the home
make sure you remove food and water before putting him in and take out for bathroom break so he isnt uncomfortable in the crate because he needs to pee or poop

Your puppy will be okay and overly excited to see you when you do get him out of his crate. I have a Yorkie-Poo (3 years old) who stays in her crate for 5 hours in the morning and she is fine when I get home. If I leave her in there for more than 5 she tends to have accidents. Puppies usually need to go potty at least every 3-4 hours.

never ever leave your dog inside the crate. since your dog is a beagle and since beagles are calm dogs let the dog hang out around the house instead of instead of inside the crate so your dog is much happy

He'll be fine! Make sure to take him outside to go potty before you put him in there and take him out immediately when you get home to minimize the chance that he urinates in the crate. Good luck!

You left your tshirt in there and some noise going so I'm sure he will be alright. You are smart in crate training him so he doesn't tear anything up or get into trouble when you aren't there to help him if he did....
He will be alright!

I'm sure he'll be ok. Why not leave a few treats and toys in there with him too. You said he quieted down when you left him, he sounds like he'll do just great!
