You need to remember he's 4 years old. Yes 4 is old enough to listen, but still young enough to be interested in everything else but you.

But, there are a few things you can try. When ever you want to get his attention, and or talk with him get down to his level. Use a calm voice and tell him why you're upset with his behavior, and reinforce it's not him, but his behavior that you don't approve of.

Get down on his level look him in the eye hands on his shoulders when you speak to him. If he doesn't listen ... tell him he is punished while you are looking eye to eye and give him a time out for 4 minutes everytime it happens until he does listen. And, tell him that he will be punished everytime he doesn't do as you say, It worked for me and my youngest is now 9. She's perfect and very well behaved.

I have always beleived that when a child behaves better at someone else's house that was a sign of good parenting. The child behaves and does what is asked of him/her because you taught them to behave and play nicely. They are doing what you said you wanted them to do. At home with Mom the child feels free to be herself or himself and thus doesnt listen as good etc.

I have the same problem...only my son just started working up temper tantrums to the point that he throws up when i try to discipline him....I need some good pointers! I would love to give him a nice smack on the bum...but thats not really the way to go...but it seems time outs dont work either! So when you find a good way of discipline please let me know!!! lol

You are not stern enough with him. You are the parent and have the power to enforce punishment. Until he thinks you are serious he will not listen.

Its not just your son. My son cleans up at the sitter's house, my mom's house, etc, but when it comes to picking up his toys here at home, he just laughs at me. I think all kids are like that.

Stop talking to him and just punish him.
