I really love dogs, but my family's beliefs do not allow having dogs.
I can't have one now as I live under the roof of my parents, but when I finally have my own spot, my family will still forbid me. Should I go against them and get a pet dog?

No, I'm not rebelling. When I go out, and walk past people walking with their dogs they always seem to come up to me, and I just give them a pat.

That's really your call. Personally it depends how attached you are to your parents. Are you independent? Can you afford and take care of a dog? Once you are an adult and living outside of their home you have the right to own a dog. but please remember that until you own your own place it will be hard to find an apartment that will allow dogs. Also think about the fact that they live for up to 15 years. This is a big commitment. I would suggest that you go to your SPCA or pound, and sign up for a program there to spend your afternoons or weekends with a dog. They always need dog walkers and in my town they have a program where you can keep the dog for the weekend while the pound is closed and bring it back Monday morning. Try that out first before you get one. It's a big responsibility and if you don't have help or acceptance with your parents, then you might regret it. But at the end of the day, do what feels right and is in your heart.

May I ask you why it is against their beliefs?

How far away are you going to live from them once you are ready to move out? - I agree with the other answers that you should not get a dog if your family would have the ability to put your dog into danger.

A dog is quiet a bit of work but well worth it. You should volunteer to work at a local pet shelter and get an idea of how much responsibility a dog is. There are always ways to help out dogs even if you can't have or afford one of your own.

But whether or not you should get a dog, that is only for you to answer because you are the one making the long-term commitment (yes I said the C word ;).

what relegion or culture are you that your family would forbid a pet dog?

well first, since you've never had a dog you may not realize all the work involved. they need attention, exercise, and they will make your house a mess and destroy possessions. I don't think you would want to jump into dog ownership with no experience.
perhaps you could start by working in a shelter, dog sitting, dog walking, or just borrowing friends dogs.

other than that, I can't answer your question if I don't know WHY your family forbids dogs.

This sounds strange, but I will venture an answer.

For the good of the dog -- you said you like dogs, right? -- don't get one. You don't want someone harming the dog or turning it over to a pound for spite. You don't want the dog becoming the object of a tug of war in a family dispute.

I suggest you visit with the dogs of friends, and just enjoy them, without owning one yourself. Maybe some day in the future...

think about this one hard. It would be your decision, but is it just to rebel against them or do you really want a dog. Also is it worth the family strife. Make sure you have these questions answered prior to getting one. Just remember. When you choose to get a dog you make a commitment for life. So please know what you want so there is not yet another abandoned unwanted animal out there.

Dogs are ALOT of hard wok. you need your family to love it just as much as you do. I have a dog and i will not leave her alone for more than 6-8hrs at a time so it can be hard to have a social life aswell. My family will look after her when i need them to.
I would not reccomend getting one unless they support you. PS why on earth dont your family like dogs? they are the most wonderful friend and companion you could ever have. They obviously dont understand it but they shouldnt critisise what theyve never tried

when you move out your family cannot tell you that you can or cannot have a dog...

of course when you live with them you should not get a dog because all pets should be family pets and when you go to College and cannot take the dog with you they would probably put it down...

sooooo - save your money so you can move out and buy your own home and get what ever pet you want - but untill then it would be unfair to the dog to bring it into a home where it isnt welcome and it isnt a "forever" home anyhow...

I don't really understand your term "Spot". If your spot means that you are on your own and are being responsible for your own home, I would think that with your independence you could make your own decisions. If not, then save your money, so that when the time comes, you can purchase whatever you please. Living with your family usually requires everyone cooperating, and going by the head of the households rules.

When you have your own place how can they tell you what to do. If they do not like they can get over it.
