That depends upon where you live - apartment vs house, city vs suburbs vs rural. I've had mainly smaller houses and I can guarantee that large dogs do NOT fit.

Second thing is to think about your energy level and the energy level of the house. If there are a number of kids in the home then a dog that has high energy would be happy. But I just had the experience this summer of getting a pup that had high energy and trying to make her fit into a fairly low key household. Didn't work and after 6 months I ended up having to give her away. So think about how much activity goes on in the house.

If you're single vs married vs with children that has a lot to do with it, too. Some breeds of dogs just don't do well with children.

Finally think of your personality. If you're a fairly strong-willed sort of person, you can handle about any dog because you won't let them assert dominance over you. However, if you're a less assertive individual, there are definitely some breeds you don't want to get into - an Akita for one. These dogs need someone who is very strong and determined to handle them.

There are good books out now that put different breeds into different categories to help you determine what's right for you. Check out your library, local bookstore or pet store. That'll help most.

Good question. =)
There are many breeds for different people.
What is it that you are looking for... A watch dog? A toy dog? A working dog? What purpose will the dog have?

How big of a dog do you want? Do you like big, medium or small dogs?

How much money are you able to spend on the dog?

That's a big step of narrowing down the right breed for you.

Just remember that most people forget that once you have a puppy it will eventually grow up to be a dog - and that's when most people give up (and put their dogs away) because now they have a little training to do if they missed out on that and only played with and spoiled their lil' pup.

it depends on you and your situation. You need to research dog bbreeds and take a look @ your personality and lifestyle. Different breeds have different personality traits and quirks. They also can have medical issues that are common for the breed. You need to figure out what you want to deal w/. also you need to check out if there are any restrictions in your area. Breed specific legislation (as stupid as it is) is becoming more popular as a way for politicians to deal w/ dog fights/attacks. (instead of dealing w/ the owners that are training the dogs). Some landlords have pet restrctions as well
With this said. I think the best kind of dog is a rescued dog. They know the bad and know the good when you provide it.

Hi. The best kind of dog to get would be a dog at the animal shelter. You may Evan find a pure breed there. If you have your heart set on getting one from a breeder I guise that is fine. But I know I would want to save the dogs life!

That depends on what breed you like and how well the will fit into your lifestyle.
If you are not very active and like to sit around and watch movies and stuff a couch potato do not get a hunting breed or and terrier or something that needs lots of exercise as the dog will drive you nuts.
If you are a runner and very active get one of the hunting breeds that can run with you.
If you hate dog hair do not get a lab as they shed year round all the time. Look at short haired breeds or some of the so called non shedding breeds.
Pick what fits into your lifestyle.

that REALLY depends on what you are looking for...my personal favorite are german shepherds...they can live comfortably in an apartment or on a farm, they can be lazy and active, they are not hyper like labs but will do anything you ask (provided you spend the time and train them), they are excellent guard dogs and are NOT aggressive. They are lovey and great lap dogs, they are extremely intelligent and just plain incredible. They are sooo well rounded. I love them. They come in many different color pattenrs...black and tan, black red and tan, black, white, bi-color (blanket shepherd)...

and while it's annoying that a lot of people fear them (unnecessarily because why would the police force use an aggresive, unruly dog???) it's actually VERY comforting knowing that some people might be too scared of your dog to come and rape/molest/steal or kidnap you .....quite a cool thing if a child is walking the dog, or a female.

and at heart...most german shepherds are just big babies! :) i love them to pieces

It depends on where you live (apartment, house), how big or small of a dog you want. What kind of exercise the dog will get. I would suggest adopting. There are so many great dogs out there with no home.

i think that you should get a pit bull. But i guess you should choose the dog that you're cool with. and that you think you can handle because some dogs are hard to take care of. Because if you get a big dog then you're probably gonna keep wasting your money on food because most big dogs eat a lot.but just get a dog that you're cool with and one that you like. but it also depends on where you live.and what attitude do you want a dog to have. But just think of the dog that you like the most and best represents you. But don't get a chihuahua cuz they bark too much and they're annoying. Mostly little dogs bark a lot. Try to get a medium size dog.But get one that you would like to have.

depends on your lifestyle - anyone who simply tells you to get this or that kind of dog without asking you questions regarding what you want from a dog and what you are willing to put into your dog really isnt helping you or any dog...

some dogs are very intelligent (border collies, jack russell terriers) and require an owner who has LOTS of time to devote to keeping them busy or they will become extremely destructive... other dogs are not so bright (shih tzu)but require alot of hair maintanance.... and everything in between - do depending on your needs and wants and time - you need to invest more learning...

step 1 would be to go to your local SPCA or animal shelter and look at what they have there.. discuss your time and experience... an older dog is probably alot better than a pup if you are not home ALOT... (housetraining - teething)

NEVER NEVER NEVER buy from a pet store - you will pay too much for a low quality pup and be given poor info because they are just trying to get a sale

Adopt from an animal shelter... don't go to a pet store or a breeder, as there are so many dogs that need to be adopted.

Breed depends on what you are looking for... do you want a big or small dog? Do you have children?

Talk to someone at the animal shelter and tell them what you are looking for in both size, demeanor, even pet hair (long, short, etc). They can really help out!
