Make her a diaper cake. Go to google or yahoo and search "diaper cake recipe" and it will tell you how to do it. Best thing is, everything used to make the cake is usable to the parent so not only is it sentimental, but it is useful as well. Or you can make a diaper wreath. Search the same.

Best of luck to your friend!

You could get her something like a handmade blanket, my son got a knot blanket for his baby shower and has to have that blanket or he won't sleep. Another good gift is a wall plaque with the babies info on it. A baby book in whatever theme she is doing the baby's room in. They will use a baby book for a long time. You could also try a membership for pictures, so every time she gets the baby pics done she gets a discount.

This isn't sentimental......

There are two things that my newborn loves. 1) A boppy pillow (she sit in it; can sleep in it, breastfeeds in it). THEY ARE AWESOME! 2) swaddle me - she loves to be swaddled but she gets loose from it if we just use a blanket.

Sentimental is great, but it really should be practical. I'm sure your friend will also need dinner - she won't be able to cook for herself. You could set up a gift certificate for take out or deliver it yourself. You can put the presents and 'gift ceriticate' into a cute gift basket.

If you are into creative gifts, then go and buy a baby laundry basket. Wrap the basket up in cutsie wrapping paper. Then, fill the inside of the basket (after it's wrapped) with many needed small baby items, like thermometor, pacifiers, baby clothes, etc. When the basket is truly truly full then wrap the whole thing up with clear basket foil. It will look very nice, and very thoughtful.

I would like to remind you that when choosing a gift for the baby, keep the mother in mind. Everyone is so absorbed with the baby that they forget the mother. Diapers are always needed, and I would advise something special for mommy!

For my shower a friend of mine took my son's name Connor with wood letters, painted them, hung them on ribbons and then put it on something like a stick. I love it. She also took those plain white cloth diapers that people use as burp clothes and sewed a bright fabric down the center of it. It makes them look nicer, and I have actually seen them for sale in fancy botiques. Have fun!

When my child was born I told everyone to just get diapers (cheap and go through tons), but one person did out of ordinary. They gave me tickets for free night out where the'd keep the baby. I loved it. Just to get extra time. I got a hotel room and slept my butt off!!

If you can crochet or knit, make a baby afghan. Otherwise you can sew a baby quilt easily. The employees in the fabric shop will help you. Something you make will be remembered, something you buy won't.

One of those kits for handprints. A gift basket full of stuff to preserve memories.
