I remember an ex-girlfriend of mine came from a devout Catholic family. Her mother saw that I had some tattoos on my arms, and told her that I would not be able to get into heaven.

I thought this was absolutely hilarious, but also just plain deranged.

It started me thinking... "Wow, how can I ever have a decent relationship with this girl's mother, if she thinks I'm destined for hell, no matter what?'

(I never bothered telling her I was an atheist, too. That would have been a hoot, I'm sure.)

Why decorate needlessly a body which will be destroyed in due course of time? Better focus your attention on the immortal soul, which is your real self. If you cleanse and decorate only the cage without feeding and taking care for the bird within the bird will die.
So, become self-realized and then these kind of questions will be no longer of interest for you, because you will discover something much higher.
I wish you good luck!

P.S. You may decorate your body with a mark, called "tilak" using clay from a sanctified place like the Ganges or Yamuna rivers. Thus you declare that your body is a temple of the Lord, who is actually residing within your heart. This act will purify your consciousness from material contamination.

Marking and desecrating the body is listed as a sin, but it's in a part of the Bible often ignored by Christians. That part of the Bible also lists things like eating pork as sinful. Tattoos aren't listed specifically and who's to say a tattoo is a desecration?

Not really a sin but un-clean. God did not allow his people to mame or mark themselves. As such many of traditional tattoos come from false religion. Even though the marking you may put on have nothing to do with religion, the fact the practice has religious origins.

This law helps keeps Gods people clean and safe from diseases and so on.

According to the book Catachism (sp) of the Catholic Church, tattoos are a sin. Anything where you put something on your body that is not naturally on your body is a sin. For example, Ear Piercing is also a sin. Crazy hey? I'm catholic and I have 3 tattoos and my ears pierced. Kind of a ridiculous rule.

Orthodox Jews dont get inked. Technically I dont think anyone is permitted to, but I have them, and 2 are Judaic in origin. The Tree of Life, and the Hebrew letter Ayin underneath it. Im Reform Jew for the record. All it means is I cant be buried in an orthodox cemetary, which doent matter. I want to be cremated, which is also an orthodox no no....

The bible does not say that Tattoos are sin. There are verse that talk about it. Like not to ink yourself for the dead.

It states clearly that we are not to mark ourselves in that way.

" 'Do not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the LORD.' "
Leviticus 19:28 (New International Version)
