Evolution again. We communicate with eachother as humans by spoken and written word as well as body language. But, the written word can be very powerful because we put a more well polished translation of our feelings into it, and it makes for compelling reading. Specially when it's from someone very special.

This use of words would affect the right side of the brain, the intuitive side, that does not use logic and reason to sift through meanings but allows general trends to be seen and emotions to rise from unexpected connections. I suspect this ties in to the "collective unconscious" and also underpins the entire field of poetry and literature. Also, on the darker side, it underpins the manipulative art of propaganda and is the basis for cult followings. Emotions are common to mankind, so it is possible for one man's writings or utterances to profoundly affect other people. But since we are not all wired the same, differing interpretations arise, some producing even more powerful emotions. These might be the basis of shifts in language, alterations in old texts, some sectarian movements, etc. etc.
There is nothing wrong with being moved by words. But if they undo balance and well-being, it is best to bring the left brain to bear, lest one become swept away down a dangerous river.

Art is the stored honey of the human soul, and gathered on the wings of misery and travail!
You might ask yourself, which is the more powerful?
The pen or the sword........I think we all know the answer to that one. Words can have the power to "wound or destroy", or "to make the gods "envious with longing" to take part .
