Spring and autumn are the best seasons, according to Beijingers (I have lived in Beijing for 20 years). Unfortunately both are pretty short. Autumn is easier to predict - it comes pretty regularly late October. Spring can come anywhere between February and April, and sometimes seems to last for only half an hour before summer heat arrives.
But I would suggest don't be a wimp. The best time to see Beijing is during Spring Festival (Chinese New Year). That is about the only time you can see a city any different than any other major international city.

Winter is not that cold in Beijing. In February which is the month of the Chinese New Year in 2007, average temperature during the day is around 4 C and at night around -6 C. The previous poster is right, it would be the best time to visit that city during the New Year, I'm going to be there at that time!

Definitely in Spring! (March or May) Don't EVER go there in Summer (it's the stupidest thing you can do), you'll have yourself baked, the temperature goes up to 42 degrees in Summer. Autumn's ok. Winter in Beijing's cool. The snow there was beautiful last time I went. Trust me, I went to Beiging for 2 years. An awesome city!

In September 2005 I visited Beijing, Xian, Guilin and Shanghi. The weather was mostly excellent. The hotels with a swimming pool were the best because our tour included a lot of daily walking. We will be going back to China next September to visit other areas of China. I hope this helps.

golden Autumn - for sure
weather is fine in Beijing - not hot not cold, and not windy like Spring. and summer is the peak time - Autumn is really the best

fall is the best. winter is too cold, there are sand storms in the spring, and summer is too hot. fall is just right!
