we've got the cutest golden lab, she 7yrs old and still daft as a brush, she sings to you in the morning when you come down stairs, brings you tea towels everytime you step though the door as a gift... and she can hear a kit kat wrapper opening from...at least a mile away!..... which brings me to the point,..... chocolate is bad for dogs yet they love it so much..... if you say 'no' to her she just gives you those sad puppy dog eyes and you end up giving her some, even though you said no a sent her away....., how do they do this........ were did they learn it from?

well, part of the problem is you are reinforcing the behavior. All dogs have that look, thats why they call it puppydog eyes. But when you give into her, you are reinforcing this behavior. I know it is hard. I have 2 beggers myself. You just have to be firm. if all else fails. Don't eat candy @ home.

Awe you dog sounds such a beauty and so lovely too, yes they are manipulative but in the right way, we have a golden retriever and she is about the same as your dog with her tricks and ways of trying to get food out of you, when you come in from the supermarket she is in the bags like a rabbit thinking you have solely gone shopping just to buy for her, if she hears a bag rattle in the kitchen shes at the door pleading with her big brown beautiful eyes staring into the back of your head and you always have to turn round and look at her, how do they get you to do that, she eats whole carrots just like bugs bunny and looks so cute with it between her paws, but hey there good for them, we call our dog a skip on legs, cos any rubbish you throw at her she will take it, our dog loves Maltesers and OK so chocolate is bad for them but a couple a week as a treat hasn't done her any harm, shes 11 now and deserves to be spoilt, Labradors and retrievers are the most beautiful dogs in the world but also the greediest buggers going, but we love them no matter what.

I have two labs, one yellow and one chocolate and like yours my yellow lab brings presents and likes to trip you up (the chocolate one is too lazy for that)

However labs will eat anything - if its not moving and not nailed down it is edible.

You could try buying some doggy chocolate and give her that when you are eating your kit kat or just give her a dog biscuit cause lets face it they don't taste anything anyway.

It sounds as if you have a very smart lab! Have you ever thought of training her to do things for you? Like retrieving the paper, opening the fridge to get a soda, things like that. Its sounds as if she wants to please you. So teach her the things she is allowed to do, and make that very positive. Let her know however the tricks she has been doing, such as eating chocolate, is not a good trick. So as to your question how do they do this? He probably learned it from you. You in someway gave a positive reinforcement to the behavior, and they will continue to do it that way because it pleases you. Good luck with the training!

Giving in to those "puppy dog eyes" is what's doing you in every time. You have trained your dog to know what she can do to get what she wants from you and that "no" doesn't always mean "no".

In any case, chocolate is REALLY bad for a dog and you should never give it to them at all. If you want to give her a treat, go to the store and buy her doggie treats, the soft kind. They'll be much better for her.

They try it once and it works, this teaches them that doing this will result in a reward. So they keep doing it. I have a Lab/Shepherd mix and she sings too! She's the Queen of those kinds of looks!

But do try to watch out about the chocolate, it can lead to kidney failure. They have doggie treats that are "chocolate" - a doggie safe-chocolate (some sort of carob).

Good luck and I hope you have many, many happy years with your sweet girl!! :)

Theobromine in chocolate can kill a dog.It takes alot to kill a lab as they are fairly large but there are only about 10 thousand things your lab will like better than chocolate.
Try cut up hot dog pieces. They LOVE them. Or any smelly
meat thing. Dogs are carnivores and they love meat.
Humans love chocolate dogs lke hot dog much better.
Labs are not knowwn to be manipulative dogs. That would be the more harder headed independant thinking dogs like Dobermans, and such. Labs are mostly easy going and love to please their owners.
