Like most people are saying, it takes 3 minutes for best results but a trick i learned when becoming a chef was to add a little salt into the water. This helps to make the shell slightly soft so that when you come to take the shell off it wont come off in a million pieces.
If you wanna have some fun i can tell you how to see the yolk while its still inside the egg. All you need is an egg, a mixing bowl half filled with warm water and a candle. What you do is this:
Take the egg and hold it over the flame of the lit candle. You will notice that the shell starts to go black. You need to do this over the hole egg until the shell becomes like an ashy feeling. Then put the egg into the bowl of water. You will notice that after about 20 minutes you will be able to see the yolk inside the middle of the egg. Voilá... X-RAY EGG!

I would set the egg in a pan of cold water (regardless whether the egg was at room temperature or from the fridge) and then increase the heat until the water was boiling. Give it three and a half minutes (for soft boiled), take the pan off the heat and pour in plenty of cold water from the tap to stop the cooking process. Serve.
I know that some writers say that if the egg is at room temperature you can pre-heat the water. I have found that if I do this half the eggs crack during cooking.
Sorry for the long answer but if it brings peace, I hope its worth it.

OK!
Well of course since you know how to do it, just tell them ya put it in a pan with water and put it on the stove that is on and let it boil. Depending on if you want it soft or hard boiled. I was taught to hold the egg in a spoon after about 4-7 minutes. Count how many seconds it takes for the water to evaporate,, tell you if it is done. Usually 4 seconds for the shell to be dry.

For a soft boiled egg, put it into cold water, bring to the boil and then boil for 3-4 minutes.
For a hard boiled egg 6-7 minutes and then put into cold water to stop the yolk from discolouring.

The colder the egg, the better it peals.
Boil water with dash of salt in the water. Add the egg. For Hard boiled (for sandwiches or deviling them) boil until the egg steams dry in a spoon within 5 to 8 sec. Remove egg, cool, peal, eat.

Hard boiled eggs:
Add eggs to water once it has boiled. Make sure to add some salt to the water to make the eggs easier to peel. Let them stay in the boiling water for ten minutes then take them off the heat and let stand for two minutes. Take eggs out of pan, and add them to a dish filled with ice cold water. Let them sit there for thirty seconds and they are all set!!

Egg in a saucepan covered with water. Teaspoon of salt (it makes the shell come off easily) ... Turn on the stove ... Exactly 14 minutes later, turn it off. Run under cold water and remove shell.
Or ... put the egg in salt water that's at a rolling boil .. leave for 10 minutes. Turn off heat and cover the pan for 5 more minutes. Run under cold water and remove shell.
