Has anyone used good software for a family tree? I know there are some popular titles out there, but how do I know which one is the best? I want to buy one that is really good.

Best depends on your budget, talent and taste. FTM is the market leader. Roots Magic has some impressive credentials. PAF is free. Reunion is the only one that runs on a Mac.

is devoted to genealogy software. Go there, use "Best" as a search argument, CHANGE THE RADIO BUTTON FROM "ALL BOARDS" TO "GENERAL BOARD" and read 4 years worth of opinions.

I have used Family Origins and its sucessor, Roots Magic, for 8 years. I tried FTM and FO both; FO was the best for me, hands down.

I have used family tree maker, I have an old version about 5 years old but it is pretty good. Don't fall into all they extras these companies offer like the cd's with names of your ancestors names on it. I have bought some and all they say on it is the name, ss # but offer no info on relations to anyone.

I use Family Tree Maker http://shopping.yahoo.com/search;_ylt=A0oGkmDCeDdF.gYA5YtXNyoA;_ylu=X3oDMTBxdjdmNG5nBGNvbG8DdwRzZWMDc2MEdnRpZANpMDIyXzQ4?p=family%20tree%20maker%202006

You could try Amazon to purchase it as I only got the link from doing a search.

Here are some other programs listed in download.com which may be of interest to you http://www.download.com/3120-20_4-0.html?tg=dl-2001&qt=family%20tree&tag=srch
