It is how you approach the individual and what you start to talk about. Most I would think would like something like that. Put a twist in there trip.

If I were traveling the world, I'd certainly appreciate it. Personally, I like the less "touristy" experiences in my travels - speaking with people locally and finding the out-of-the-way places. Everyone has a story about visiting the "tourist-traps" but I prefer to return from a trip about the little cafe I found or the person I met along the way who I'd have never known otherwise.

I am an American, and I was strolling along a street in Germany and some folks from another German town asked ME for directions, IN ENGLISH! Do I look American? And how would I know? Actually, I was able to steer them in the right direction. Next time I'm in New York I'll ask a German where the nearest ATM machine is.

Sometimes if i am abroad (by the way i have been to India) people obviously see that i am American. They just come and start talking to you when you are walking and trying to go somewhere it is a little annoying. However if i am in a store or restaurant and you are close by i don't mind striking up a conversation. It is kind of interesting gives me a chance to ask more questions about the culture

It would depend on what part of town you were in, what time of day it was, and if you were approaching someone of the opposite gender. If it was a bad part of town at night and you were approaching a female tourist, she might think you were trying to rob her. On the other hand, it might be nice to carry on a conversation with some of the locals. I guess it just depends on the circumstances.

If it were me, I'd be leary of you. Not because I'm in a different country, but because people now a days always have an alterior motive DTA don't trust anyone. I'd probably talk to you for a moment and clutch my bag the entire time I was talking to you in discomfort.

No I think that is kind of rude to impose on strangers. But maybe they were trying to be friendly to you and not ignorant

Just be careful in how you approach them...depending on where you are, and where they are from, it could be pleasant or frightening.
