It is true that the Brits in Malaya (yes to the donuts who think they are being clever, there is such a place) during the emergency in the 1950's did employ something called hearts and minds.

This was a dual approach of using minimal but highly trained and specialised military forces to conduct counter terrorism and also to live in and amongst the people.

Unlike Vietnam, there was no mass bombing, civilians being killed, or forced movement of people from their villages. Instead the peoples trust was gained and at the same time the special forces soldiers used their skills to live for months in the bush in small groups out thinking and outfighting the guerrillas.

Yes it worked.

Would it work in Afghanistan and Iraq.....without Abu Ghraib and a biased press corps maybe, but not now.

No, I think they just want to slog it out with one another, and it's not our soldiers' job to die trying to stop them. What gives us the idea that we are the policemen of the world?
