...or does alcohol simply get passed through? I ask because people are always saying how high in calories alcohol is - but if the liver simply filters all the alcohol through you then surely those calories are not absorbed by the body?

Alcohol starts being absorbed the moment it enters your mouth.It's also absobed down throgh the esophagus and then all the way through your tract.
I think the word you're looking for is digested.Alcohol requires no digestion,only assimilation then metabolism.
And yes all toxins consumed orally are passed through the liver.

The body digests the calories in the alcohol and the by products go to the liver for detoxification.

Your body processes alcohol by removing what it can use (calories) and filtering the toxins (liver prcess). So you gain weight and manage to overwork your liver at the same time. Ouch!

The calories are absorbed. That's why beer makes you fat.
