Google for a Linux distro such as Red Hat, SuSe etc etc and follow the instructions.
And yes, you can have both Windows and Linux (I have SuSe 8 on mine)

Go to the web address below. Download the DVD files if your computer has a DVD burner or the CD version if you have a CD burner.
After that make the CD's (This will vary depending on what software you have to make the CD's)
Back up all the important data files on your PC (Just in case there is a problem)
Put CD 1 (or the DVD) into your drive and reboot your computer.
Follow the directions.
If you need more help, feel free to contact me.

PS, yes you can have both OS's on your PC but (to answer the person above me) only one will run at one time.

You can doanload many different free versions of Linux. (Seriously not a problem), that usally are in iso format.
You can then create installation disks from these.
Linux distros, allow you to set up Dual Boot options ..these allow you to choose which operating system to use on boot up.

You will have to defrag your hard drive first, use free software to create partitions and then install the distro on whicheve partition you require.

Acronis partition is simple to use to do this...(but the last time I used it was three years ago) there are probably even easier ways of patitioning your hard drive now.

Good Luck...(though if you have a rubbishy computer to test this out on first... i can only recommend doing so).

Go to Puppy Linux.com Puppy can be installed directly onto a partition with Windows. They co-exist quite well. Since Puppy is only 80megs it takes up very little space. I must warn you however that once you "own" a Puppy you will soon see just how bad Windows is.

In addition to dual booting which will only allow you to run one operating system at a time, if your machine has enough memory and a fast enough processor you can run virtualisation software such as VMWare and run one operating system 'inside' the other.

Best of all, several version of VMWare are now free ... http://www.vmware.com/products/free_virtualization.html
