I need to format it because i need to access a database stored on a server, and for some reason i cannot access. the IT dude running the database told me to format it.

Since you can't lose the WinXP OS already installed, that means you can not do a format of the hard drive. You might try the "Restore" feature in WinXP, which will allow you to restore the laptop to a previous known stable state.

If it is a virus problem, then you should use a viruscan software. There are many FREE virus software that you can download from http://www.download.com/3120-20_4-0.html?tg=dl-2001&qt=virus&tag=srch

Since I don't know what exactly is your problem that makes you think that would require a reformat of your hard drive, you might want to take a look around www.download.com and see if you can find the necessary utility software you need to solve your problem.

Hi >
Oh dear, it seems like you do not have an "authorised" copy of XP.
Why re-format anyway, I wonder. usually a needless thing to do.
Give the thing a goodly check-up and sort-oit with something like Norton Utilities software.
Works a treat.
Bob.

go out and buy a xp disc because once you start messing in things your not sure of, your going to need it. if it still working get a friend to give it a tune up, or google it to find out how to do this yourself. IE updates, remove any spy-ware, defrag, run anti virus and stop unnecessary programmes from running.

the same way you can break a glass whidthout loosing the water that you have into it.
YOU CANNOT FORMAT WIDTHOUT LOOSING YOUR INFORMATION.
you can create a backup of you hdd and restore it after formating , but if you do so ... there`s no reason to format the hdd as long as after formating you make it back as it was before

partition!
You might have been given a backup file. If you didn't just format the rest of the hard disc using partition abilities
