Yes...Thank GOD! I have these installed...

Apple MAC

Linux flavors:

Knoppix - You don't have to be a Linux expert to install Knoppix; in my experience this is absolutely the most configuration-free Linux distribution, which runs OK on the majority of computers (including many laptops). Knoppix starts directly from CD-ROM, but you can also install it on your HDD. I liked the fact that since it runs directly from CD-ROM, it allows you to try it out before actually installing it.

Ubuntu - "Linux for Human Beings" for PC (Intel x86), 64-bit PC (AMD64) and PowerPC. It is suitable for both desktop and server use I use it as my server. The current Ubuntu release supports PC (Intel x86), 64-bit PC (AMD64), UltraSPARC T1 (Sun Fire T1000 and T2000) and PowerPC (Apple iBook and PowerBook, G4 and G5) architectures. My home network consists of MAC's & PC's/

Mandriva Linux - A Linux distribution that is available for 32bit PC, PowerPC (MAC), and 64 bit processors such as Intel Itanium and AMD. It includes many graphical administration assistants & wizards that make it intuitive and fun to use while providing all the power and robustness of other Linux systems.

Most common alternative is one of the versions of Unix, with Linux currently being the favorite home version.

There are older systems like OS2, but are rarely used and not longer supported by anybody.

There is a European OS called Lindows (they may have changed the name because of a law suite from Windows). Again, it is another flavor of Unix

Or, you can get really radical and buy a MAC

But this is about it.

There are many different OS's out there. It all depends on what you want.
If you like graphics and multimedia - Mac
If you like to reboot everytime you move your mouse - Window$
If you want an all around workstation with plenty of apps - Linux
If you are looking for a web server or other server type - FreeBSD
All will (now) work on a PC and each has a varying degree of difficulty to run. (Listed from easiest to hardest)

hi...if you have your computer running 'windows os' and you want an alternative, then visit the 'sunmicrosystems' site, where you can download their os and load it on your computer to replace the 'windows os'...and its free to do so, i did for my stand only computer and found it a better operating system, with less security problems, less updating, plus all my loaded programs worked ok, even the windows stuff.
