Yeah, that why they spell and pronounce some words different to us! They try and make it unique. Sad really!

I am British and I get knarked about the fact they don't have their own language not because they should have their own language but because they spend so much time and waste so much of my time correcting my British English with rubbish spell checkers that will not allow me to have a British England dictionary instead of the American one.
Microsoft give it a rest will you!
And Mahgri you forgot to include India which has British English as one of it's three official languages plus 50 other countries in the Commonwealth and to exclude all the Americans who only speak Spanish

They don't hijack the English language. America was first colonised by the English. Were they supposed to make up a whole new language??!
It's normal that language evolves over time, and will evolve differently in different places. So American English is different, but think about differences between dialects and vocabulary in different parts of the UK!
America happens to influence the world a lot more than Britain does, and American English is more widely used in business. That's the way it goes, don't automatically treat it as some sort of insinuous American attack on English.

There are very few things English that are envied in the States.
Of the English language, there must be some question in the matter of proprietorship. It is an Anglo-Norman bastard tongue, with remnants of Celtic and bits and snippets picked up from the imperial experience.
There are many Englishes: British, Indian, Australian, Irish, American, Hong Kong, Singaporean (where they also use a creole called Singarish), and recently I read that a distinct species was developing in Taiwan. All of them have unique pronunciations, and vocabulary inclusions unique to themselves.
American English is the most interesting because of its lean, direct efficiency. It had to be learned by millions of immigrants from non-English-speaking countries. They learned it as a language of the streets and shops, for communicative competence, and in this process the language lost many of the graces and flourishes of British English but gained in precision and brevity. American English, not British English is the form being studied all over the globe in the greatest learning effort in history.
What England had that the U.S. did not was a nation. In America, nationalism is an artificial creation. We are a mongrel state, and in many ways, that is our long suit.
Don't you love diversity?

Personally don't think the Americans mind at all. As someone said earlier English is spoken in so many countries that there are bound to develop different versions of it.
I'm not a native English speaker myself. But it really bugged me today when I saw the lyrics of Beautiful Day by U2 on an American site, containing the sentence: "after the flood all the COLORS came out"
For me that should really be COLOURS as U2 are an Irish band and in Ireland they spell the word like this...

They won't get knarked because they believe that they do have their own language!! They don't really hijack our language as such. Yes they change it however they only ever simplify it, assuming that phoenetic spelling is the way forward. Let them have their simple fun, we all know that we're in the right.
Plus on a side note, the f word they use so much is an acronym that was used by constables when they found people making the beast with two backs - people were Found Under Carnal Knowledge

Why pick on Americans? What about Australians, New Zealanders, South Africans? Americans are not the only ones to speak and write a variation on English. Goodness knows, even the English don't speak and write it the way is was when some of was were 19 or 20.............and, yes, for me that is a long time ago :-) Still, that is the beauty of language............it evolves and changes, just as people do :-)

Native American Indian language should be the national language of USA. It was British those who came to America and change their native language and who cares. English is not a one country language. English is an World's Language and most of English speakers are not British and you are talking about Britain that's very small and the World is a main thing.

No I don't think so at all. Especially as in Europe you can do a university degree in American.
I think the Brits have a hang up about the Americans and their spelling and pronunciation.
My sister teaches English in France and has American colleagues that teach businessmen things like "gonna" and "gotta", which is the pits isn't it? I admit it, I'm a Brit and I find it annoying the way they pronounce lieutenant for example!
But maybe we should try to be a bit more indulgent?

I'm neither British nor American, so I'm neutral. I think Americans don't care at all about the thing, are the English that for some reasons are so fussy about American English. Americans have roots in many different Countries, including Africa, Asia, and many parts of Europe, so it's normal that their language has been influenced by all those. Be more tolerant, you Brits!!!
