can artificial intelligence think like lawyers or judges

Artificial intelligence is based on rules and boundries given to it by its creator, and thus cannot out do the human mind since we have no rules or boundries which limit our thinking or that god has given us. Although there is the usual theory where computers do become 'self aware' and out smart humans depicted in films like the matrix, it is likely that humans will always have the upperhand in intelligence.

Hope this helps

Absolutely not. Lawyers / Judges rely on subjective criteria, on interpretation. Computer rely on set rules. The Law is not set in concrete, rather it is guidelines which are modified by our culture, our news and our behavior.

How could a computer:
recognize the 'look' and 'sound' of believability?

take into account someones 'situation' as rationale for the 'crime' (specifically I'm thinking of an abused wife that never reports her abuse and then, one day, snaps and beats her husband)

determine what is the best 'punishment' for a person, given their personality?

No, computers make spreadsheets, people are lawyers and judges

NO no matter how much advanced technology gets they can never think as screwed up as lawyers do and as for judges they probably are the same cause they too listen to the lawyers all day

A computer is only as good as the person who wrote it... It can be written to a HIGH level but cannot out do the human mind!

computers can not write their own programs so there is no such thing as true computer intelligence since the programs were written by living humans.
