this would be something more for the parents but the child will love it also. its a molding kit you can buy at the craft store. you can make a mold of the childs hand and after its dry you can paint it. This is good so the child can look back at it in the future and see what art work he/she made when they were only 1 yr old. This maybe a little messy but im sure the parents would enjoy this and so will the child.

Little People... fisher price has a great line of toys that one year olds adore. My son played with the farm every day and its a total age thing from about one to three little people were tops in our house. The farm has some great interactive things to do, all the animals make sounds and it builds on a lot of skills. The plus if you by one big set you can add smaller additional sets, horse stable, bunny house for each holiday and not even have to think about it!

I'm sure the kid will be spoilt rotten on the day. Why not take a bottle (or three) of wine so the parents can a have a few relaxing drinks after the kids are worn out. Thats how I remember birthday parties in my family anyway......

Depends on whether its a boy or girl?
I suggest something robust and tactile. How about a doll with a section of wigs so she can use her imagination?
In fact that's the key to a good present for a young child, get something that they can play with in bed or on the floor. Things that fit together like a simple wooden train or a lorry and trailer. Put yourself in their shoes and dream!

At that age the child is not gonna really care about presents. They will end up with loads of stuff from ELC, why not get some vouchers for Mothercare or something, that way the mum can pick up something that the baby really needs, like clothes etc.

You could either opt for something practical for now - perhaps some clothes or certainly a toy from ELC.
An alternative is something which can potentially last and be somewhat on an heirloom. Something like wooden toys perhaps?

Since it's a 1 year old child, he/she might not be able to read yet. So don't give him/her baby books as presents c'z he/she might eat it. Give him/her a nice dress that he/she can wear outside. Cuz now that he/she's 1 year old, she/he can now be exposed to sunlight. Or you might just give him/her a pair of baby shoes, cuz some 1 year olds today are able to walk slightly or crawl.
Good luck and have fun!!

Summic colourful, noisy (the parents will love that, lol) and kinda educational, babies love anything thats colourful and interesting for them!
Dont go down the road of jewellery, thats just a silly idea! Its a baby, there only interested in anything they can chew!

A cheap brightly coloured toy (suitable for a 1 year old) and some vouchers for Mum and Dad to get clothes or equipment at mothercare/babies r us.
Think cheap for the little one - they won't care! But show Mum and Dad you're thinking of them. :)
