I dont know what real irons do, but I definitely prefer flat irons. The temperature depends on the type of hair you have. The more coarse your hair is, the higher the temperature has to be. To get the best results with a flat iron, iron small sections at a time. The end result is having straight and silky hair.

It will ruin your hair honey, dont do it!! I was in my hairdresser a while ago and a young girl came in and she had been doing exactly that and her hair was wrecked, she was having to go back to the salon weekly for intensive conditioning treatment.
You can buy proper hair straightners these days at a reasonable price, you can probably pick a semi decent pair up for about £30. make sure you get ceramic plates though as these are smooth and glide over your hair, the metal plates are too harsh and drag on your hair causing it to be pulled from your head or damaged.
Also when straightening your hair make sure you use a product on your hair to protect it. I use L'Oreal Hot Straight, it's in a bright pink bottle and is fantastic. You put a small amount on towel dried hair and dry your hair either using a brush or (as I do) use your fingers as a brush. Then I usually section my hair and straighten it.
Good luck honey but please dont use an iron on your hair, BIG NO NO

You should never use an iron (its only use is to iron clothing). Clothing irons will totally damage your hair. NEVER EVER try it.
You can buy a T3 hair straightener.
Check out this website: http://www.salonlines.co.uk/forwomen/?category_id=405&p=1
You can also use this method:
Prepare your hair by washnig it with Infusium Maximum Body Shampoo and Revitalizing Conditioner, condition the ends only. Comb, then spray 3 to 5 pumps of Infusium Complete Healthy Body Treatment into your palms, working it through the hair's damp ends (do not rinse). This will help make your hair soft and manageable with exceptional body. Twist damp hair on top of your head and secure it with a large cliip. Starting at the back of your head, release your hair in sections 1 to 2 inches wide. Using a large round brush, pull the hair taut and blow-dry down the length. Try to aim the hair up and away from your head to add lift to the roots, especially near the crown. Work your way around the head, drying each section and letting it fall. To avoid helmet head, be careful not to curl the ends in. Finally, pump Infusion Complete Frizz Control Treatment 2 to 3 times into your palm and evenly smooth it over dry hair, parting as usual. The pro-vitamin formula will keep frizz at bay and leave your hair free flowing and shiny. Restore hair's shine with Infusium Power Pac 3 Minute Intensive Treatment.
I hope this works for you. :)

In the past people used to use the actual iron, but that caused hair damage and major split ends.
In this day and age people use a flat iron, it's like a curling iron but flat and not rounded. You should look for a one that has porcelain coating to prevent hair damage.

A flat iron is made specifically for hair. My mom used a clothes iron when she was in high school but that was before they made straightening irons specifically for hair. Spend the $15 at wal-mart and save yourself the backache!

It's best to go to walmart and buy a hair straightener. They don't very much they can be any where from $15-35. The regular iron will probably damage your hair! Or you could go to sally's. But the best one to buy at walmart for a good price is by Revlon and it cost about $20!
Good luck!

Girl you have to use a streightener! If you use a regular iron then it will totally burn your hair. Using a straightener is very easy (but remember you can still burn yourself, so be careful:), all you really need to do is take some strands of your hair then place the straightener on your strand of hair. You can also use a clip to get under your other.

No way girl !!! you dont use that kind of an iron for ur hair !! use ur common sense !!
and since ur 12 years, u should be more careful about ur hair. if u dont take care of it properly during ur growing years, u could end up with terrible hair for the rest of ur life. if possible refrain from iron hair straightners as the heat damages your hair. if your hair is naturally wavy or curly deep condition it regularly and u'll end up with sexy beach hair. trust me... i do this. and i have frizzy hair.
if u still want to straighten your hair, please buy a proper hair straightner.... if u wnt borrow mine but DONT IRON YOUR HAIR LIKE THAT !!!!
