Ever since i have known, i have never gone to school, college, uni or work on Eid Day. yet i know so many people who do... and when i ask them why, they say 'oh i have to work'.
My point here is why do u have to work on eid day, when u take christmas day off work... isnt eid day as important as xmas day??

trust me i wish i was in Saudi during Ramadhan....i guess living in the uk has changed peoples ways of thinking...we focus our lives around work..but it would be nice to see eid day as a public holiday over here..not just for muslims but for the whole population...

Christmas is a public holiday in this christian society, that's why we take a day off... I am sure you could book a holiday with your boss? teacher and such here on religious grounds... But the question Muslims only!!!! well says it all don't it... aren't we allowed a opinion then?

Yes, I take an off day.
In many Muslim countries in Asia, 25th December is a national holiday. But Eid is not a holiday in Western countries.
Luckily, where I work, is actually an American store, but its general manager is a Muslim. That's why I don't have to worry nor ask, he makes the work schedule for Muslims by giving days off on Eids. Like next week, I got Monday and Tuesday off.

Salaams. I live in the United States. I will go to the mosque for half the day. If Eid falls on Sunday, I wont be working. If Eid falls on Monday, I will take half a day off. I just started this job in August and I feel its appropriate to ask for the time I need to observe. However, I don't feel I need to have the whole day off.......for what? To watch TV? (my relatives are not Muslim, I converted.....although I have new friends in the Muslim community, I have no plans on Eid).

It will be a public holiday where i live. And i am taking a week off! To visit my family. Honestly, it is only during this time that i get to visit them and i look foward to it every year.... But you know, many other people have to work during public holidays, be it eid or xmas.. esp those in the service sectors. From what i know their leave will get credited with one extra day. But when you got to work, you got to work. Happy Eid everyone!

as being here for last 2years i really miss eid days& atmosphere in ramadan in pakistan we have. but certainly things are different here as this is not a muslim country and we cannot force anyone to announce public holiday just because of muslims Eid day.
in pakistan on xmiss and new year there is no public holiday but all christians take their days off because of xmess and nobody said that no u cant.
as same as living in UK(most open society)if we request from our bosses, managers, teachers that we want a day or days off then i dont think that they will say no to u. everyone knows the importance of holidays here.
although being a part of business it is hard to take a day off but still i with my all friends we just go to work just for couple of hours at evening time and that's it. if i m working somewhere then i definately will not work on eid day.

I took two days off, so that I would be sure that one of them will be Eid Al-Fitr. Back in Egypt, we got two weeks off school.....and even at work, it was VERY RARE that anyone Muslim would work on the Eid.
Now that we are in the west, I take time to prepare my family for the Eid. Finding a fanoos Ramadhaan, balloons, nice clothes, good food (nothing fancy, just a meal), toys for the kids.... And a stroll in the park, for the Eid. I am trying to re-create what we had in Egypt, as much as I can insha'a Allah.
Not all of my family members could take this Eid off (one of us works in Denmark) but insha'a Allah next Eid we will all be together. In fact, one day insha'a Allah, we will all be together for an eternal Eid/Jummu'ah in Jannah. Ameen.

As Salaamu Alaikum, I am a stay-at-home Mom, I never get the day off! However, my husband has always asked for the possible Eid days off. He has never been denied his request and he has even offered to work Christian or other holidays to make up for it. He has never asked to be paid for these days off. By the way, we are located in the United States.

You have a very good point! I haven't been taking the day(s) off, but it was important for me to attend the Eid-ul-Fitr prayers, which usually occur around 9:00 am in the States, depending on where you live.
However, this year, I decided to take the day off (Monday 23rd), and I will be doing that from now on, InShaAllah!

In the arab countries, they do take the Eid as day off. You have a point of view. it is a religious day so why the whole man kind takes Xmas and We as Muslims can not take a day off on our one of the top Muslim ceremony. well, the majority are christians. Business firms (world wide) can not close on every religious day. you also have to take into consideration the buddhists, jews...etc...
convinced?
