I don't think Marriage is necessary for a happy family, but I think its basis is of sound foundation.
Marriage is all about security and solidarity, and it's a good thing from my point of view.
That said, happy families outside of marriage do exist as a family is not about Marriage... that's two people pledging their own beings to each other in the act of holy matramony.
A family is not just Mam and Dad, it's everyone in the family and everyone has to work together to make it a happy place to be, not just Mam and Dad picking up the pieces, cleaning, cooking, teaching, paying bills or otherwise, hteir has to be unity in the family, and this of course comes from the parents teaching their children what unity is at an early stage so that later on it becomes second nature... not to say that children don't learn the value of this later on 'cause most do.
But still, a marriage is between two people, a family's happiness is not dependant on two people being married, that's more for the couple that such a partnership state exists!
Don't know if that answers your question, but suffice to say the answser is yes, families can be happy outside of marriage as marriage is about two people - a family is about two people working together to raise children and those children working with the parents and each other to be part of and enjoy that family.

Marriage is not necessary for a happy family - your right. If you need a marriage certificate to prove your love and commitment then you've got problems in my eyes as it's only a bit of paper in the end. If you don't trust, respect, love your partner then a whole load of money to stand up in front of a whole load of people you don't really know isn't gonna change that.
We have been together 9 yrs, 2 children and blissfully happy. I don't need a bit of paper to prove that we're gonna stay faithful, in love and all that - only time will tell that but to us, children are a bigger commitment than a bit of paper.
Not knocking it but doesn't work for us at the moment - maybe one day but each to their own.

I think you can have a happy family without marriage. The problem comes in from the outside. There is a certain stigma attached to children born out of wedlock that people outside the family can use to hurt your children. Peer pressure is a terrible thing when trying to raise children.
I'm not saying it is right but it is there. I don't think celebrity familys such as this are a role model because famous celebrities have enough money to controll their children's environment.

What difference does being a celebrity make? I know a few couples with kids who chose not to get married and the difference seems to be that at least one person in the relationship will always doubt the others true commitment. Make all the excuses you want, it comes down to how truly commited you are. Heard this line of reasoning alot in the last 20 years.

Hey u:
Well even I thinks that marriage is just a cliche but no matter what society and religious principles gotta be followed!
There is an Indian actress who is unmarried and has adopted kids on her own, so she is single parent and raises the kids and she is soo happy! She says she is happy without marriage and the kids fill in the blank.
Well, my dear it doesnot matter what celebrities think its normal people like us who's gotta live with our own choices! They are the stars untouchable!
Neverless, marriage has become a joke and its just a thing for financial and sexual security!
