Im starting a business to photograph weddings, parties, and private photo and want to know if there is any equipment that is a must beyond the camera and any suggestions on the best camera when starting out. I currently have a nikon 6 Mega pixel and a canon 8 megapixel

Congrats on getting to this point! I'm working on it slowly but surely. A tripod is a must. And a remote would also be a good thing to have. I would look around on eBay for some backdrops. They have reasonable prices from time to time. While you are there do a search for some props. I haven't gotten as far as lighting yet, but definitely check into that as well if you don't have any lighting equipment. And the obvious, additional lenses and filters.

Depending on the camera, a 6 and 8 mp will allow you to print up large prints while still maintaining good quality resolution. You should be able to get a nice looking 11x14 from the 8 mp. I know a couple of pros that use the Canon Digital Rebel and they say it is equal to other professional grade cameras in the $2000 to $3000 range.

Other than that, I don't know. These are just things that I have come up with so far that I feel that I will need when I get to where you are. I wish you the best of luck in your new venture!

Go to www.photo.net and read the message boards. There are a bunch of veteran photographers that post there all the time and have a lot of great advice. If you're really into photography, you'll get hooked reading all the posts!

Look under Wedding/Event Photography ... there's a beginner's board that always has lists of equipment for newbies :)

Good luck!

Equipment: Speedlight that goes with your camera. If you buy Studio lights for the wedding party portraits, I suggest the http://www.alienbees.com/ . Always have extra batteries or flash cards at a wedding.
