While it is true that if you "spare the rod, you spoil (ruin) the child."
It is also true that if you use the rod you spoil (ruin) the child as well.

Excess either way will result in a ruined child. The answer is in moderation. At a very young age is when spanking is most effective when the young child exhibits that is not important to listen or pay attention to the parent. Spanking can also emphasize the importance your disagreement of a child performing some act which could have irreversable or serious consequences to that child or another Human.

If it is done at an early age properly the need to do it later becomes minimized. Of course reasonning is the best recourse, but when that does not seem to work, as your child decides to put a fork in his sister's eye, or drown the cat, or lure children out of a school by activating the fire alarm to set them up for target practice; then a spanking just might be in order.

I don't believe in spanking children. I think a firm tone using the child's name, and a no can be very effective to stop a child in their place. If a child does not stop, a count down can be very effective. If you reach 0 on the count down follow it up with a consequence, early to bed, chores, groundation, loss of a toy. Also follow up inappropriate actions with a time out and then a discussion on how they should have behaved or other choices they could have taken.

Spankings causes resentment from the child towards the parents. It teaches them to dislike and fear the parents. Sometimes the child will think more about how the parent hurt them then what they did to get spanked. Later in life they will remember the spankings, but usually not what caused them.

Children should be spanked. I am talking about a little spanking, not abuse.

Some people say no good comes from spanking, but in reality, children that are spanked develop a bigger sense of respect and obedience towards their parents and grow up to be people of good.

I live in India .... depends on the age when u spank ... its okie when they r small and not able to understand much abt it ... they anyway wnt be scared of u ... but when they r like 6-7 yrs old.. one shud stop it as it the fear of it wnt stay if u conitinue so... as they will get used to it ... No respect comes out of such things in children ... instead they just start hiding things out of fear from you ...and also lose a lot of confidence ... I am talking abt my experience as i have noticed the difference in children wo are brought up both ways .... It really matters a lot ... abstain totally from it at the right time ... they ll love u more ...
