how many Christians would there be? Does the answer imply that belief is really self-serving?

Probably a lot less would say they're Christian. But a Christian's motives for his/her belief should be to lead a good life, and to help others as best he/she can. If they're not, God, being the omnipotent being he is, would see through a, as you say, "self-serving" belief. So, in essence, according to Christianity, a person who believes in god merely to help him-/herself isn't really Christian; in other words, there'd be just as many true Christians if there was no promise of eternal life.

Jesus said that few would find the path to eternal life and that not everyone who calls Him "Lord" will enter His kingdom, but only those who do the will of the Father. There are far too many people in our churches now (just as there always has been) who are there to see what they can get from God, not because they want to have a relationship with Him. Since eternal life is contingent upon making Jesus our Lord and Savior and having a relationship with Him, not just about trying to get fire insurance, there would probably be just as few who seek God even if we didn't have eternal life. Unfortunately.

Knowing what I know, I would still want to be a Christian. The relationship I have with God now is well worth it. Good question.

religion extends the belief of eternal life to everyone simply becasue that is the sole purpose to religion, to "make up" answers toquestions we can't know the answer to

I was morally proper before I was Christian,

you real question is - would you be good or bad, if life was all there was? I was good when I believed that.

To think deeper, your question is "Are athiests good or bad?"

Christianity without Jesus dying for eternal life, is no religion at all

"If" is a very imaginative and unreal word. Handle with care. I can ask a question like, "If you were Christian / Moslem / Atheist (etc.) what would you ...." but in fact you are not.
