Hi there...cat are naturally drawn to people who do not make eye contact with them. Cats considered eye contact a confrontational behaviour so anyone who avoids looking then is considered safe and therefore worthy of a friendship if accepted.
When we train exotic (wild) cats who decide to not cooperate we look away and ignore them. Suddenly they become interested again before we turn to acknowledge them.
Try staring at the cat and observe what happens. Most likely the cat will look or turn away. Few cats however are the exception to the rule as they could care less if you look at them or not.
Here's a web article that shows it's best not approach an injured cat by using direct eye contact (see paragraph titled "Approaching a Frightened or Injured Cat"/3rd paragraph): http://www.sniksnak.com/cathealth/firstaid.html

Ask your parents if a cat scratched you as a kid? I am curious as to why you are afraid. They usually gravitate to those they trust. It's an honor really. My aunt was terrified of cats for decades and wound up getting one as a house pet. It lived with her 14 years. Why don't you have a friend hold their cat and try petting it on the head. Pet it from behind if you are that scared and make sure the cat is declawed. Condition yourself gradually and eventually the fear will go away. This is no way to live!

Because you don't like cats, you look away from them. To cats, this is friendly behavior. If you want the cat to keep away from you while at your friend's house, just look at the kitty. They'll avoid you. If you're outside, just ignore her/him. He/She'll get the picture eventually and leave you alone. Maybe s/he's an affectionate kitty and just wants a little attention. I know you're scared of cats, but just try giving kitty a little love.
Both of you might be better for it. Good luck.

In my experience/opinion, cat's are evil-naughty. My cat does this to people...well, everything. He won't have anything to do with people that want to give him attention, but if you don't like cats, he's all over you. They are smart. Smart butts. And they know what buttons to push. That or they are so insecure that they try to make you like them. But i don't get an insecure vibe from my frankencat. So they must be ebil.
Seriously though, I cannot figure that out why cats are attracted to certain people. It floors me too. but I do lean toward what I first said.

Ok..I don't particually like cats either , I think their cool but that's about it. my friend is a cat lover and has 5 cats .cats love me, they come to me all the time. Even though I have a dog they try to come inside my house. My friend on the other hand loves cat and all the cats (includeing the ones she feeds)avoide her like mad. Why is this? It's like cats love being hated. (no offence to cat or catowners y the way)

Some cats like short people and children...I noticed that a lot. They also like people who don't pay attention to them. Can't really tell the you the reasons because I don't know.

maybe the cats are trying to tell you that you are a cat person you just won't admit it so why not give one a try you are suppose to face your fear to get over it than maybe they will decide they don't like you after all

If you don't like cats, there's a pretty good chance you watch them when you're around them. Cats perceive this as your making eye-contact, which they in turn perceive as an invitation or a challenge. If you'd like them to leave you alone, the best thing you can do is simply avoid looking at them.
