I don't know what is in you weekly shopping basket so I can't say what you are doing wrong there but guess we are all guilty of spending too much on food. Or is it the food we are spending too much on?
Many of us get tempted to buy too much junk when we go shopping Once I read an advice from someone that you should write a shopping list before you go to the shop and not buy anything that isn't on it (even if you forgot to write toilet paper, you wouldn't be allowed to buy it).
Never go grocery shopping when you are hungry. Then you are much more likely to buy something you don't need.
Try to plan the meals for the week ahead and buy only what you need for them.
Stock up on items that keep well when they are on sale. Be careful not to buy things on sale just because they are cheap. You don't need them to decorate your kitchen cupboards if your'e not gonna use them in the next couple of months.
Buy in bulk and put it in the freezer in smaller portions.
A healthy meal doesn't have to be fancy. I'm not saying you should live on rice and beans but make sure some of the meals you have on your menu are inexpensive.
If you tend to buy too much junk food (like most of us do), replace it with something healthier or just skip it.
Don't buy the ready meals. It's usually much cheaper to make your meals from scratch and that way you know what you are eating.
.... wish I could follow my own advice

I got two old shopping baskets at home. I keep socks and knickers in them before they get folded up and put away.
I spend too much on food too, i think. About £130 per week for 2 adults and a 3-year old. But these days you have to have pay more to look after yourself. Most of the cheap food is full of hydrogenated fats, monosodium glutamate and sweeteners. I tried to exclude glucose-fructose syrup from our diets but that is like impossible. Not a lot left on the shelves without it these days.

Make a rough menu for the week ahead and make a shopping list and stick to it..only shop when you have just eaten....cut out most of the junk food you and the family don't need it..get plenty of fruit and veg it is cheap and nutritious...shop around most major stores run a few really good buys but re-coop it by higher prices where you may not notice..look out for buy one get one free offers ..one thing I often find too is that huge boxes of detergent are poorer value than there smaller counter parts so be aware of this ..good luck I`m sure you will manage to reduce your bill...

Hi!
There are 4 of us in my house, and I normally spend £70-£80 on food & things, but more if we're having company. This includes:
fruit & veg, bread, meat, milk, soft drinks, toiletries, toilet roll/kitchen roll, tea, coffee, cereal, yoghurts, sometimes crisps & biscuits. If there were 3 of us, I'd probably still spend about £60. My sister spends a lot more than me though, well over £100 because she buys a lot more snacks, drinks and convenience food ,has more visitors than me and she has 2 dogs. My advice is to always make a list and stick to it. Don't buy loads of chocolate or fizzy drinks-you won't miss them if they aren't there.
I have to go to Sainsbury's now, and it's pi55ing down & very windy-ugh!

You should have told us what you buy. Just stick to the basic necessities at first. What do you have in your food budget to spend? We buy 7 packets of 3 pieces of meat, potatoes, carrots, celery, green pepper, tomatoes, lettuce, dressings, bread, milk, eggs, green beans, peas, parsnips, cucumbers, tomatoes, butter, cereal, soups, yoghurt, a packet of pudding, potato chips and snacks for lunches, peanut butter, jelly, cold cuts, cheese, cottage cheese and fruits.

i do not know what you are doing wrong, however this is what i do:
i make note of what food i have on hand[both refrig, freezer, and cabinets..] [for all meals]..
i make a list of menus that i can use what i have on hand
then what i need to complete these menus,i put on the list. if i need more menus for the week, i add ideas and then put items on the list to buy.
i also check the ads for good buys for that week, and purchase them for next weeks menu..i save quite alot doing it this way.. hope this helps
