Yes, both. All souls are connected spiritually, across time and space, similar to a collective energy field. All the positive energy, thoughts prayers and memories, the love that joins humanity comprise heaven/the kingdom of god where there is peace, truth, harmony with all existence. Anything that separates us from that perfect love and unity causes separation and suffering, usually tied to an unforgiven thought or memory, event or relationship, injury or sin. So the bad karma or curses that pass down collectively can attach the spirit to hell, while the good blessings and prayers connect us with heaven. Strong souls and/or angels can descend into hellish domains to help relieve the ignorance or unforgiveness that otherwise traps other souls in various realms of hell. Some of the spiritual cleansing process is likened to the concept of purgatory. So that is why forgiveness is necessary to let go of negative past issues so that healing and correction and reconciliation can take place to rejoin us all in the heavenly realm where mature spirits dwell in peace. You know I dont think so. Anything that you see, feel, experience in this world is somehow works on a circular basis, tell me if I am wrong ( I know I am not :-)) Circle of life - have you heard this expression? It would be the greatest contradiction of all, if life and death work like this - I mean living for seventy-something years, and then being on a completely good or totally bad place... something is just not right with this! Yea, I am not a believer, I just like thinking about this, and for me these extremes are unacceptable.

Present evils (injustice, cruelty, etc) in this world demands that there be a future rewards and punsihment = heaven and hell. Otherwise, nothing in life makes sense: "eat, drink, be merry, for tomorrow we'll... be like the vegetables sold daily in the market."

It depends on the human view dear friend. when we believe that a super natural power is there to guide us in all walks of life and we call as "GOD" obviously it paves way for the belief that there is hell and heaven to govern our soul after death :) Infact life leads in faith...
