As B said, it's called defimation of character in the US. It's difficult to prove, but can be done.
The burden of proof is on you to not only prove that the person made the statement about you, but that the statement was untrue. You then have to be able to prove to the court that there has been some damage done to you (loss of work, health problems...) due to the comments.
You'll need a good attorney. Best of luck!

Well...
The First Ammendments protects your freedom of speech. Meaning, if you call someone a snake, for ex., your chances of wining a lawsuit on the basis of slander are slim.
However, if you call a person the "n" word, it can be interpreted as a hate crime, and you may have negative consequences imposed.
But technically, your freedom of speech to say whatever you want is so protected, that you can even call a cop an @$$hole, and he has no right to arrest you. However, provoke a disruption anywhere with the insult, and then he'll have a reason to take you.
So, what is the cop going to do? He'll provoke you until you get so upset that he has a reason to take you. That is why the cowards provoke, and instigate reactive citizens. Because otherwise, their civil rights do not empower a cop to abuse citizens.

If she is spreading false information about somebody that negatively affects their reputation, then yes, it is a case of slander. And as long as the person she is slandering can obtain witnesses (even if subpoenaed), then that person has a very strong case.
As far as spreading it through newspapers or other such print material, that is called libel.
First Amendment does not protect an individual right to spread false rumors that defame a person's character. Newspapers and other media get sued for this kind of case quite often, especially tabloids.

Yes, and should it be done against liberals who do it all of the time. Slander usually refers to something that's spoken.
